K, I have a strange problem with my recent build. If I leave my external hdd (500gb WD mybook essentials edition (usb, 2x firewire 400, esata)) on overnight (goes into standby on its own when it disconnects from the pc or when i shut the pc off), the next day when i turn on my pc the drive causes a BSOD during boot, but only the first boot. each time after that it works perfectly fine, even if i turn the external on/off, disconnect esata and reconnect it again, and let the hdd stay on standby for 5 min or so then connect it again. Also, i tried disconnecting it and letting the pc boot without it (after leaving the whole setup off overnight). it booted to windows and logged on fine, but the INSTANT i plugged in my external the pc gave me a BSOD.

error code for the BSOD:
BCCode: 1e
BCP1: FFFFFFFF80000003
BCP2: FFFFF80001862800
BCP3: 0000000000000000
BCP4: 00000000000003C0
OS Version: 6_0_6001
Service Pack: 1_0
Product: 256_1
Server information: 767d1869-541f-47cc-9449-5d66cb85897f

yet all my info on the external is still intact and i have no other errors, SMART or otherwise popping up except for this. This started happening about a week ago for no apparent reason. I've been doing windows updates every few days and updating my graphics drivers, but nothing else that would seem to cause this other than surfing the net.

Any ideas?

Are you using AHCI?
Do you have the AHCI drivers installed for your system?

thanks for the quick reply, i guess i should have stated more info about my setup. I have an asus p5q-e, which used the ich10r for the main sata ports (6), and a marvell 6121 controller for the esata and ide ports. ahci can only be enabled on the ich10r ports, and the only option i have to change for the marvell controller is whether i want to boot from it or not.

either way, i found out the problem: overheating hdd!
i placed my hand next to the external and felt it to be very warm. curious at this point, i carefully opened the encolsure without breaking it and found the hdd and the rest of the inner components to be extremely hot (almost burned my hand touching it). i let it cool off for a few minutes while i blew cold air over it, then i disassembled the entire thing and stuck the hdd into my case. after booting into windows, i tried plugging in the external adaptor (esata connector w/o hdd connected to it) and it gave me an insant BSOD (different code, but still...) i've decided to keep my hdd safe inside my case for now, and i think ill stick to "swappable" external enclosures for the future (like the thermaltake blacX with usb and esata :D)

till next time, thanks again [H]
