Windows boots to a black screen

I have a major driver issue with my Asus 9600XT. When I try to boot into windows with the video drivers installed, I get a black screen. If I go to safe mode and uninstall the drivers, I can get into normal mode fine. I've tried many driver versions and reinstalling does nothing. I'm running WinXP w/ SP1a, Nforce2 mobo with 3.13 drivers.

Any help would be appreciated.

Reformat and do a clean install of everything. Sounds like you have a major software conflict going on somewhere. Also, when you install your MOBO software......do NOT install anything that says nVidia...it will conflict with the ATI drivers.
 
What do you mean don't install anything that says Nvidia? I need to use the mobo drivers.....

Which part of the Nvidia drivers don't work well with ATI?
 
PCI to AGP bridge. After you install windows, install the drivers for your video card, then do the MOBO software..........The nVidia PCI to AGP bridge software is conflicting with the ATI PCI to AGP bridge software.

Actually, it's the other way around. Installing the ATI video card drivers first, then the NVIDIA chipset drivers, will actually overwrite the ATI GART driver with the NVIDIA one! And that will mess up your system. And once that's done, there'll be no way for future ATI drivers to integrate properly with the chipset's GART driver.

Install the NVIDIA chipset drivers first, then the ATI videocard drivers. That way, the ATI GART driver will integrate with the NVIDIA GART driver.
 
I'm still having the problem. I've tried every order in installing the drivers, and windows won't boot.

Anybody have any other suggestions?

If you've been booting to a black screen with the ATI drivers installed, but a normal screen with the drivers uninstalled, then it looks like you may have a problem with your GPU overheating. Which size case are you using? And how many case fans are you using? Or, did you connect a power supply connector to your card?
 
I have an Antec 3700 w/ 2 120mm fans. I dont think its overheating. The 9600XT doesn't have an external power connector, does it?

If your 9600XT has no external power connectors, then your GPU may still be overheating even with two poorly placed 120mm case fans. Furthermore, your Antec SLK3700 case itself is on the small side, making matters worse. I've tried my older system in a smaller case than my present Antec SX1035B case, and then later put its innards into the SX1035B, and even with one front 92mm fan and one rear 80mm fan, the system in the smaller case ran 15°C to 20°C (CPU and GPU temperatures) hotter than the identical system in the larger case, while the system temperature ran nearly 10°C higher in the smaller case as opposed to the larger case.
 
Doesn't show any symptoms of overheating. It is consistant, no artifacting or whatnot.

So i install Win2kPro sp4, Nvidia 3.13 drivers, then ATI drivers.

When does direct x fit in the order?


Any other ideas?

This is what I install, in this order:

1. Windows
2. Chipset drivers
3. Your ISP's online software and all critical Windows updates
4. DirectX 9.0b (or whatever the latest version of DirectX would be)
5. Video card drivers
6. All other hardware drivers
7. Applications and games
 
Could there be some sort of compatability issue? I've never run into anything like this, or heard of it. Seems like everything should just work if i'm careful about it.
 
Sounds like when my ti4400 began to die (with nothing in my sytem ATI)

Have you tried it in any other systems?
