I am about to upgrade from Windows XP Pro 32 bit to Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

However, the Windows 7 advisor said the Sony Artisan monitor calibration sensor and software will not work in Windows 7.

1. Does anyone know if it will work in Windows 7 XP mode?

2. If not, can I create a dual boot configuration (Windows XP 32 bit and Windows 7 64 bit)?

My hope would be to boot into Windows XP Pro (32 bit) and calibrate my monitor and create ICC profiles then use these profiles in Windows 7 Pro (64 bit).

My plan is to use Adobe Lightroom 2 and Photophop CS4 in Windows 7.

3. Will the dual boot method work?

4. Would someone point me to a good tutorial for creating a dual boot system?

5. Is it better to put both OS systems on my Raptor X drive (fastest) or on a separate drive?

6. I thought I read that Windows 7 XP mode is limited to 16 bit color? If so can the color depth be increased to at least 24 bit (the calibration software requires at least 24 bit color). If the color depth can be increased, does changing adversely affect XP mode?

My current system is as follows;

1. Intel Q6700 Quad Core 2.66 Mhz processor
2. 8 GB.of DDR2 800 Crucial Memory
3. Intel D975xbx2 motherboard
4. WD 150 Gb Raptor X Hard dirve (Currently only one partition with XP)
5. 1 Seagate 7200.10 320 GB Hard drive (Working Files)
6. 1 Seagate 7200.10 320 GB Hard drive ( OS Paging File)
7. 1 WD Black Caviar 1 TB Hard drive (Final storage -photos, PS scratch disk)

8. 1 WD Black Caviar 1 TB Hard drive (Final storage - videos, OS and IE Temp files)

Can you find a new version of the calibration software that's compatible with Windows 7?

Windows 7 XP Mode is nothing more than a virtual machine. You have to install MS's Virtual PC to get it to work and it, quite frankly, sucks IMO. Not sure if Sony's software will communicate in the same way to the monitor that the host system will so it may not work the way it's intended or wanted.

Aren't the sony artisan's all CRTs? I doubt they will upgrade the software to windows 7 anytime soon for discontinued products....

Yes, The Sony Artisan Color reference software is not supported in windows 7.

Yes the Sony Artisan Monitor (GDM-C320K) is a CRT.

I've loaded the software in XP mode and seems to work except to make the fine adjustment is color, it needs at least 24 bit color and XP mode only support 16 bit.

Is there a way to get 24 bit color in Windows 7 XP mode?

On the menu bar at the top of the XP Mode window click "Tools" >> "Disable Integration Features". XP will then lock the screen so you'll have to log in again. After that, go nuts with the color settings.

NOTE: YMMV. When I disabled the integration features, XP became as slow as molasses. Also disabling the Integration Features will disable the seamless windows ability.

I have not tried it but I have read that if you boot into a virtual drive from the boot loader then the full pc components are available to the VHD XP, so maybe thats a way to get XP.
Limitation is that is similar to a dual boot setup, you'd need to reboot out to get to win7, so if your trying to setup colour in win7 from xp then your hooped. Unless they update looking for another piece of software to do the same could be the answer.

another thing that just came to me, I run Esignal and the company say to run it in XPsp3 compatibility mode, to do that right hand click on the shortcut (if it lets you install it, that is) properties, compatibility, tick XP sp3

for dual booting I use easybcd
