Ok,
I don't want to run VMs for folding and I would like to use all 4 cores on my Phenom II X2 (550BE w/ all 4 cores unlocked). I tried the MPICH version last night and I couldn't get the configuration options to appear when I used -configonly. Anyone have a clue what is wrong? i.e. did I mess up or is it a client issue?
 
dumb question, but you sure youre set as admin and running as admin? I think the SMP client can get finiky with that stuff, but I havnt run the SMP clients since Vista days, VM/s were just too easy.
 
Yep, my user is an admin and I did the right click on cmd.exe & run as administrator too. No difference :(
 
Does your Windows account have a password, and did you install MPICH going by the guide (ie running the install.bat file as admin)? One thing that's not listed in the guide (and could be the source of your problem) is replacing the F@h exe that the MPICH installer comes with, because it is expired. Grab it from the Stanford page, under "Drop-in binary for current Windows SMP console client (6.24). Expires: July 4, 2010". From that page:

NOTE: Please use the v6.23 installer package to setup the SMP client. Then download the v6.24 "drop-in" binary below to replace the expired v6.23 client executable. A new installer package with v6.24 will follow shortly.

That's the only thing not listed in Xilikon's SMP guide that you have to do. I can verify that the MPICH SMP client works fine in Win7 x64, I have it running on all 3 of my machines. You do have to have a password under your Windows account though, and you have to do everything else Xilikon's guide says. (like running the install.bat as admin). If you only have 1 account on your computer and want it to continue logging in automatically after you set a Windows password (if you haven't already), here's a guide on fixing that. (It says Vista but it also works for Win7.)

-I'm with you, I don't want to bother with VM's either. The ram hit and the initial configuration is off-putting for me. I know I lose some PPD on my cpu's, but it doesn't really bother me...it's easier to set up and run the SMP client.
 
Silly question, but why don't you want to run VMs? They are much more stable and easier to maintain than the standard Windows SMP client.

Because then I need to remember to kill them & restart them when I start WoW and end WoW.......
 
If you set the VM to a low priority you shouldn't need to stop it while gaming.
 
The only VMware product I like is ESXi as well. I hate VMware Player....

You can set it through Task Manager, with a program like WinAFC, or by adding these lines to the VM's .vmx file:

I looked in the file and didn't see where you could change priorities. Adding lines will fix that.:eek:

After the initial setup, I've had 0 issues with SMP MPICH on all 3 machines I've installed it on. It never crashes, never quits, never dumps a WU, etc. Trouble free for me. ;)
The only client I've had issues with is the GPU client, and that's the (usual) EUE "unstable machine" variety of trouble.

And I concur - having to run the VM and lose the ram, quitting it to re-gain the ram...etc. I just don't want to bother with it. It's easier to quit the SMP client and not lose or gain ram, only cpu cycles. When I'm done with my freelance (graphic design) work, I start the client back up. (GPU also)
