Windows 7 Thumbnail Crash

Has anyone figured out why windows 7 crashes if you let folders display thumbnails? I had to use the "fix" to prevent windows explorer from crashing. This "fix" basically disabled showing mini thumbnails and now shows a blank generic photo icon.
 
Been running Windows 7 in various forms since October of 2008 on hundreds of machines/platforms, I've never seen or heard of such a thing personally. Interesting...
 
Sounds like a video codec issue, check event viewer for details of the crash.
 
You apparently have a bad codec or shell extension, because it doesn't do that stock.
 
Really? If you google "windows 7 thumbnails crash windows explorer" there's TONS of threads.

I'm running a 4850. with CCC 10.4 and driver 8.01.01.1016, just downloaded from ATI's site a few days ago
 
As noted above, it could be an issue with video codecs not video drivers. Have you install any video codec packs, like the K-Lite or CCCP or Shark007 on your system recently?
 
I have CCCP as well as CoreAVC Pro. Media players include standard WMP12, VLC, Core Media Player 4.11 I have all of them because no one player works properly with the anime I watch, be it codec or subs.
 
What about media player classic (w/ no external codec packs)?

Media Player Classic Home Cinema without codec packs handles over 99% of my own 3TB+ collection. It has no problem with divx, mkv, ogg, or pretty much anything. Well, I don't touch QT or RM shit, cause if they don't care enough to release in a standard that does not suck I find another release, so I don't have any experience with those formats working or not. If MPC-HC without additional codec packs can't play your stuff, try running 2k/Xp in a VM, and installing your players and codec packs in the older OS VM.

In my experience codec packs can easily fuck Win7 up. Don't know why but, certain games will sometimes stop working, sound will get erratic, Aero will sometimes shut off, and then everything goes back to normal once the codec packs are removed.

Try updating your CCCP and CoreAVC, or else uninstalling them, or use ffdshow which I think is included in cccp to change codecs for the videos from like ffmpeg-mt to libavcodec (e.g. h264) and so on. Might be easier to debug if you could figure out what file is causing the crash and get a list of what codecs are used by the file, mkvmergegui can list the codecs of some files, and there's another utility whose name escapes me right now that begins with a G (Gspot, gshow, g-something...) [edit: it was gspot, find it here: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/GSpot ] that can do it.
 
I was going to do something about it. Waiting for my friend's old parts first to confirm.

I got my new stuff up and running with no codecs or anything. I just downloaded VLC and it seems to be playing everything I have pretty well. Only issue now is that when I skip frames, the entire screen pixelates. Is this because it's not buffering?
 
VLC is crap anyways. It doesn't support GPU hardware acceleration. Use MPC-HC instead.

As for the codec pack, I don't see why you installed it in the first place. All you need is Haali Media Splitter for MKV support and CoreAVC for CUDA supported h.264. Windows 7 can pretty much handle anything else you throw at it. Installing a codec pack is just asking for trouble.

I thought VLC was the best out of the box solution. Never used MPC-HD before but I'll give it a shot.

I always installed codec packs because the videos I use utilize multiple containers. I was also on XP MCE before I recently moved to Win7 and just force of habit I install CCCP and other stuff. My CPU was also underpowered so I used CoreAVC to watch 1080p stuff.

If MPC-HD can do all my videos and support subtitles for my anime series, then I'll be very happy :)

I've used just about every popular media player out there and this was the last one I've tried. It is by far and away as said the best single media player since sliced bread, it absolutely rules.

You have to play with it, use the shaders and tweak it so it uses GPU and not CPU.
 
So I've been using MPCHC and its not bad. However, it still has issues buffering and catching up when I skip to different sections of movies.
No more thumbnail crashes though :)

Enable video card acceleration by checking all the boxes under options-internal filters. Also increase the EVR buffer from 5 to 60.

Also if you want superior seeking, KMplayer is by far the best I've tried yet for this feature. You can fast forward through .mkv's as fast or slow as you want and view the whole thing in time lapse as it's doing it. It's pretty awesome and it handles it flawless without stutter.
