Windows 7 SP1 causing gpu instability

So I have an MSI gtx 580 Lightning that I have been running at 950 core at 1.180 volts with absolutely zero stability issues. about two days ago I installed windows 7 service pack 1 and couod no longer run 3d mark 11 without crashing to the desktop usually before the first test was even halfway done. I tried everything to get my card stable again lowering clocks upping voltages etc figuring it must be a hardware issues, finally out of desparation I tried uninstalling SP1 and boom everything went back to working perfectly.

so my querstion is has anyone else expierenced this issue and if so is there a fix for it ?
 
Why do you need SP1 to begin with? Unless you need it for something specific forget about it.
 
I don't need it really im just curious if this is a known issue or if im just unlucky :)
 
Did you install all the other patches and updates after SP1? Also I usually tend to reinstall direct X after a service pack update ever since Win XP SP2 borked my gaming.

To be fair it really doesn't do all that much the only major thing it adds is support for advanced vector extensions which really isn't a big deal unless your doing cutting edge GPGPU stuff.
That being said I still would prefer to be able to run it was just hoping maybe someone else had expierenced the same issue and knew of a work around/fix as so far my google fu has not been good enough to find anything on the issue.
 
Win7 SP1 uninstalled the drivers for my dvd-rom, so if something like this happened to me I'd look at a gfx driver refresh first. After that, I'd be stumped and posting a thread on this forum :-P
 
Unless you need an specific update for ANY software program/OS, why install it?

Just because its there?
 
1: @OP : I have never heard of the service pack being the cause of any issues like this. I would imagine the service pack installation might have modified some system files that were changed from your last driver or directx installation, and a reinstallation of those (along with anything else multimedia related) would be beneficial. The benefits of SP1 are fairly signifigant and I would hesitate before writing that off. Beyond uninstalling SP1, what other troubleshooting steps did you take other than changing clock/voltage values?

2: @Kranium : It's not possible to uninstall those drivers, as the generic driver has been the same for optical devices for ages. You might have had a filter conflict that would have caused the device to show in device manager with a yellow flag, and that may not be the fault of Windows. There are several programs that will rewite those filters in the registry without you even knowing about it, iTunes and some full-featured burner programs (like Roxio) come to mind immediately. That's a simple fix if you know where to look in the registry.
