Windows 7 S3 sleep glitch or something else?

Recently I've developed a quirk on my machine where it doesn't fully come out of S3 sleep mode. It'll power up and that's about it. I end up shutting the machine down, having to restore my saved settings out of the BIOS, and coming back into Windows that way. Technically a "bad/illegal" shutdown.

A couple of times now I've seen that same phenomenon show up even on a cold boot from a clean shutdown the night before. In general, I'm starting to get a little concerned about it.

All tips appreciated.

My PC is over 6 years old save for the Samsung 840Pro SSD, the PSU is about 3 years old, and the GTX 680 that I have in in it is under a year old so if this is a harbinger of doom forthcoming it won't surprise me. Motherboard and/or CPU. I sure hope not but I'm realistic about these kinds of things after a point.

Intel qx9650 and Asus Maximuns Formula x38. RAM is Kingston HyperX 1066 8 GB worth.

I'm running Windows 7 Pro. Latest BIOS, drivers, etc etc.
