Windows 7 or XP?

I'll admit it. I'm a noob.

My laptop recently came down with a virus. I got the blue screen of death and now I can't start up the thing in safe mode. Windows XP Pro came pre-loaded on the machine and I don't have any backup discs.

Do you think I should go ahead and install Windows 7 or should I try to find an old copy of XP online?

I think the machine might have 1 gig or ram inside of it. Is the single processor going to be an issue with Windows 7? Here are the rest of the specs.

Any advice will be appreciated. I am really lost in the woods right now.

Thank you for your time,

Michael Tapp

Just in stall Windows 7. I had it running on my laptop (Celeron 1.4ghz, 1gig of ram) and it was clean and smooth.

Thank you for all of the tips!

I know that the the stock laptop comes with 512 mb of ram, but I think this one might have more. I can't get into the command prompt or Windows to check for sure. Is there another way to check and see how much ram is in the machine?

Thanks again for all of your help,

Michael Tapp

check in bios?

You know XP is stable, the bottom of your laptop also has a product key for XP.

Windows 7 might not be as stable ... err.

Have you ever considered Fedora? (You can get the hat if you like as well.)

Turn on laptop, go into the BIOS, page one will tell you the RAM.

I have an ASUS Eee PC with a 1.6 GHz Atom and 2GB of RAM and it runs W7 Ultimate RC x-32 like butter.

I looked up the requirements. A 32 bit W7 needs just 1GHz processor and 1 GB of RAM.

Look on eBay, there are plenty of W7 copies there for cheap. I picked up a NIB copy of W7 Pro Retail for $95.:D

The OP didn't make one thing clear: Do you want to save your files or do you want a new OS.

If you want to save your XP files, don't perform an upgrade as a way to get there. Borrow an XP CD and try to recover. Otherwise, use a Windows 7 CD to get a command prompt with networking and get yoru files off the machine.

Otherwise, yeah - if you've got at least 1GB of RAM, upgrade to Win7 and don't look back.

He could simply transfer files to an external drive or flash drive using Knoppix and then install W7 clean or XP clean........:D

Exactly, files shouldn't matter...

I'd say on 1GB+ more machines of RAM, Windows 7 is the only way to go. Windows 7 runs great on older hardware, actually.

That said, something like Ubuntu runs even better. It'd be OK for the very basics, just depending what you're using it for.
