Windows 7 Backups

I thought Windows 7 backup was great until it kept all the incrementals so long it filled my entire 2 TB external drive. I had to manually delete some old backups to free up space.

After some Googling, it looks like this is just what happens to a lot of people. It seems really weird you can't set a maximum usage for this process so older backups will automatically delete (not talking about system images here). Do you know of a workaround to this?
