A buddy of mine just built a new computer and had everything installed including 2 hard drives. When i upgraded him to service pack 4, the second hard drive changed from letter Z to F (the next available letter) and became unreadable (said corrupted and unreadable or soemthing like that). I formatted it but it only shows it as having like 8 mb on it and its a 30 gb HD. Any ideas on why this happened?

I am hoping it is as simple as doing an fdisk to repartition the entire drive then formatting but I am confused as to what happend in the first place. Anyone got any ideas?

Will I be able to repartition the second hard drive and format it with a win 98 startup disk without harming the C drive??

I assume that there is a non-dos partition or something taking up the missing space but how did that happen if the entire drive was available prior to the upgrade to service pack 4???

I had to fix his cd rom cause he forgot to move the switch to make his second one a slave and I am wondering if he has both his hard drives as master on the primary IDE and when I installed SP4 is went screwy. Just an idea.......

anyone got any ideas?
 
SP4 for Win2K is really screwy when you install it after Win2K is already up and running. I would recommend slipstreaming SP4 into a new Win2K installation CD (google for info) and do a reinstall. And if you plan on using NTFS, Win98 can't read/write/partition NTFS so that wont work. If you dont want to go through the trouble of reinstalling, you could go to the Control Panel, to Administrative Tools, then Computer Management, and then to Disk Management under the Storage section and repartition and reformat.
 
With winxp at least, I have encountered a few installs that required sp1a to be installed 5 times in a row before the update was fully installed and the system would work right.

So tryin reinstalling sp4.

I've never installed sp4 after the fact. I've always made a slipstreamed cd.

So I second what tdg said.
