I have a server on my network that I am using for a fileserver, but also webserving. When I type http://192.168.1.2 in IE, everything works perfectly. But as soon as I try to type in the external IP address, it asks me for a username and password. I have a domain name pointing to my external IP address, so when I type in www.my_domain.com it goes to my external IP address and thus asks me for a password. I thought IIS was the problem, so I uninstalled and installed Apache. This didn't fix it either, so I am out of ideas.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks, Adam

you running a firewall program on your box? or running a gateway box on your network?

I have a small website I run on my connection, a windows 2003 server box using the IIS and the domain name is also pointing to my external IP address, and I have no problems. In the past I have had win2k with Apache with the same setup and I still didn't have any problems

(I'm not a server/network expert, heh at least not yet, so its just a few thoughts I had)

Yes, I am running a Cisco 831 router. I don't think that has anything to do with it. I can get to the website from the outside no problem. No password is asked for, or anything. I just cannot get to the website from the inside, using the external IP.

Most likely, your NTFS rights w/in the file system that houses your web content is not read for whichever account you chose IIS or Apache to grant access (did you disable anonymous access?).

1. If you uninstalled IIS and was using Apache, it's not an IIS authentication prompt.

2. Is there any reason why your using the external IP when the server is on your lan and you can get to it by the Internal IP?

3. Most likely there is a loopback issue involving the Cisco Router.

4. Post a screenshot of the password box......

Been there, done that! Its the router asking for a password for configuration. Two ways that I found around that was, one, add a new port to the host header value in IIS for example add port 8080 then when going to the site internally just type mydomain.com:8080. The other is a little more drastic but it was my choice because I run a public DNS server. I set the box as a bastion host, added a second nic and configured rras as a nat without a gateway on the internal nic for security.

Basically on my router if you go to either the internal address or static ip form the internal network it brings up the router config page. This may not be whats happening with yours but it sure sounds like.
