Windows 2003 DNS Error

The past two weekends, I've found issues with my exchange mail, related to a stopped DNS Server. I restart DNS, restart exchange (seperate box) and then im good to go.

The first time, I thought it was a fluke, dumb luck, as the RPC service was still running.

After the second time, I need to figure out whats going on.

The events were roughly a week apart, both on saturday, one at 6Am, the other at 12PM. Other than that, and the event log, there seems to be nothing else out of place. Both times RPC was runnign properly without any errors. No other service reported errors, leading me to believe RPC was never down.

Any thoughts on this?

I've never experienced those particular problems before, but you might want to go to www.eventid.net and take a look there. Just enter the event ID you're getting and it'll give you a bunch of different suggestions (and ones that work, too!).

Unfortunately, the best I could find was to 'restart the computer or reinstall the RPC service."
 
Was your server an exchange box? Mine is not, and the SMTP service is not installed. Its my domain controller and DNS server.

I avoided the side effects of the crash, but setting the service to automatically restart after crashes, but I had another crash this morning.

Was your inetinfo.exe crashing also? Or just DNS?
 
Mine is an exchange box. And inet wasn't in the log. Is it a multihomed box? You using root hints or a forwarders for resolution?
 
The two hotfixes I've seen specifically rference SMTP or Inetinfo, hence I am weary of installing those hotfixes.

We're using forwarders for resolution.

Also, this problem recently started, 2 weeks ago, no changes to software/hardware on the server.
 
It's been a long time ago that this subject is posted. I wonder if Manu has find a solution. I've exactly the same problem.

Does anybody know????

What kind of problem are you having exactly?
 
I've exactly the same problem as Manu. A crashing DNS. It's a domain controller with dns server. I've installed all updates (sp2) but nothings resolved my problem. So I wonder if Manu found a solution.

DNS Event-viewer:

Event-id: 4007 The DNS server was unable to open zone src.local in the Active Directory from the application directory partition DomainDnsZones.src.local. This DNS server is configured to obtain and use information from the directory for this zone and is unable to load the zone without it. Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly and reload the zone. The event data is the error code.

Event-id: 140 The DNS server could not initialize the remote procedure call (RPC) service. If it is not running, start the RPC service or reboot the computer. The event data is the error code.

Event-id: 1317 The local domain controller has disconnected the LDAP connection from the following network address due to a time-out.
