Windows 2000 and omega drivers

So I just got an X850XT and am running it without problems with Cat 6.2 off the ati website and AtiTool to control the fan. I hear a lot about the omega drivers and see that the latest omega's for win2k are based on cat 6.7. How is it that you can get >6.2 to work in win2k even though ati only supports up to 6.2 for that OS?

I'm not into tweaking at all since everything is fine atm so is there any reason to install new drivers and risk problems ie. w/o tweaking will the omega's increase fps on games and such?
