Windows 11 26H2

what that have to do with the 26h2 update?

Nope. It is a minor update to 25H2. Same basic deal, including features. Yes, it has copilot. No you do not have to ever use it (I don't).
It's also a short download and fast install, like less than a lot of patch Tuesdays. Not sure it does much. It's supposed to lower memory usage, but I didn't notice any obvious change on my 64GB and 32GB machines. My 16GB laptop is maybe idling a few hundred MB lower, but that machine isn't used for much of anything other than web surfing. I keep a laptop around so I have something portable, but don't use it much. Its primary function is looking up things to do on vacation. If I'm at home I just use a desktop.

My personal theory is MS was planning a big Copilot update for 2026, then canceled it when it became clear that Copilot was going nowhere. Then in recent months they did some tweaks to try to lower memory usage by Windows a bit since they know we're all getting squeezed by ram prices.

Could be, or they just didn't have anything big yet. You can't have a big update all the time, at least not if you want to spend time working on code. They seem to like to do a rollup every year, they may not not have had a lot for this one.

What's wild is that there actually ARE a ton of major UI tweaks in this version of Windows, but it's all unlocking server-side at random.
In addition to the Start menu and search tweaks, there's a new right click context menu hidden in there, too.

This approach is annoying as hell and I imagine IT people aren't happy when their users seemingly get this stuff at random.

Just installed Windows 11 pro on our old-as-fuck Precision M4700. Aside from the Kepler driver being wonky with the UI when connected to an external monitor it actually runs just fine and... dare I say... snappy. I've finally started moving my machines to this OS one at a time. Starting with the ones I care about the most. Eventually will have all the kids typing machines on Windows 11. The M4700 is an Ivy Bridge quad core. We have 24GB of RAM and an 512GB SSD so I'm sure that helps a ton. Am considering upgrading it to a Maxwell card, as those are officially supported (Kepler is no longer supported by Nvidia beyond Windows 10, which makes sense as they're what - 14 years old at this point?).

It's actually not that bad. I don't perceive any performance loss from Windows 10.

That's not really true. There were official Windows 11 Drivers for Kepler for nearly 3 years after Windows 11 came out, with the final Kepler driver coming out in 2024. Those were the same drivers released for Windows 10. Windows 10 didn't receive any additional Kepler drivers compared to Windows 11.

The difference is that the most current version of Windows 10 back in 2024 (when that last Kepler driver was released) is still the most current version of Windows 10 (version 22H2), whereas the most current version of Windows 11 back then was 23H2 compared to 26H2 today. So it's not that Kepler doesn't "support" Windows 11, it's only that those drivers were never tested beyond version 23H2.

I have systems still using GTX 680 cards (Kepler), and I have a Dell M6800 with a Quadro K4100M (Kepler), and both are doing great with the latest available driver on Windows 11 26H2.

What driver are you using? I would love to put it on my machine.

That is the desktop Geforce driver, the mobile Quadro driver might be older.
Yeah that's probably my problem. I'm using the mobile quadro driver. I can modify this so that it will allow it to be installed for my GPU right? I guess I can google / AI it

EDIT - it doesn't look all that difficult. Will post later when I do this. Woot - hope this fixes my problem of UI stuff disappearing when I connect it to an external display. I'm using some old 2020 driver (the last one for the Kepler Quadro)
