Anyone know if you could use the 64-bit version of Window Vista on the Core 2 Duo? I've been reading about the Core 2 Duo and get mixed answer as it being 64bits or not.

I have yet to hear anything about Core 2 not being compatible with Windows Vista x64. I would be very surprised with Core 2 was not able to run Windows Vista x64.

Ofcourse it is 64-bit...anyone who says otherwise has no idea what they're talking about.

How do I know? Because I have an E6600 and I'm typing this from Vista RC2. That, and common sense.

Interesting....you have any problems with drivers for devices and chipset? Can't wait to use vista once it get into full release.

Driver problems? Now that you mention it, I'm surprised that I haven't had a lot of problems. Only my Logitech Attack 3 joystick refuses to be identified, but my mouse (G5) and keyboard are fine. As for chipset, I haven't downloaded any drivers, and everything has been running peachy. The only quirks are what are expected from a pre-release OS.

depends on what chipset you are using, but I have yet to hear anyone with a current generation chipset complain.

I am running Vista RC2 with E6300@2.8 and trust me it is beautifull. I think Microsoft is right this will be the next big Operating system since Windows 95.

It is supper fast, i got all my hardware working fine with drivers, Anti-Virus etc.

Get it while you can. :D

Vista comes in 32bit and 64bit. Chances are that most people who are running Vista are running 32bit because 64bit has extremely limited driver support.

Vista 64 will run find sith 32 bit apps now right? Such as anti virus, games, etc..?

the "next" big OS since 95 was Win2K/ XP. They actually brought some significant enhancements for everyday use to the desktop. In my eyes, Vista is a graphical overhaul - at best.
But if we repeat the greatness of Vista enough, it'll eventually become true, won't it?

Certain 32-bit apps may not work on a 64bit machine. Anti-virus is something that I would categorize as "unlikely", but due to lack of experience on my end, I cannot tell you for sure.
Unless there is a specific application which will provide you with a significant increase in performance on a 64-bit OS, I see little reason to move to Windows XP x64 at this point, given the poor driver support and lack of quite a few apps.

If you think Vista is just a graphical overhaul, you are very high, sir.

A graphical overhaul doesn't cost 11+ billion dollars to R&D. Watch every channel 9 Vista video and tell me it's only a graphical overview - especially in the TCP/IP department. It's under the hood, man.

I was worried about my sound card drivers but just got that today , so in the next few days i am going vista.yipeeeeeeeeeeee

Vista RC2 64bit works perfectly with my 6600 and P5W64 WS Pro. The only thing that doesn't work is the Marvell secondary SATA controller, no drivers for that yet. I installed Avast home antivirus today (free version :D ) and it seems to work fine. X-fi drivers work now, I don't think they are feature complete yet but at least there is some sound. Things are shaping together very nicely, I think this OS has a fine future ahead.

i am using vista rc1 64bit right now. my only complain is, some software i have don't work, like nero 7. i prefer buying the 64bit version when it is out, why use the old and soon to be outdated 32bit version?

Becaise 64-bit has among other stupid things, required driver signing. The only way to stop it now is to boot with the F8 function and tnen you can run one session to install an unsigned driver. This is a new feature in the RC2 build, in older builds you could override it permanently.

Permissions are a nightmare in Vista too...It took me an hour to figure out how to get write access to my "My Documents" folder on my XP drive. I still can't get access to my Vista documents from my XP drive. I can't even VIEW the folder contents of Vista documents folders. There are still bad bugs in RC2 as well - once after starting word as the super-administrator, it did in fact save a file to "My Documents" on XP (the file appeared in the directory) but then said I didn't have permission.

I really resent any OS that won't let me modify files on local drives with "administrative" access.

The fact is your first boot account says Administrator, but it isn't the super-Administrator who can actually access anything - to get that you have to boot in safe mode. You can hack the registry to get it as a local account I think, but not sure about that yet.

Stuff I have that doesn't work - old Promise ATA 66 controller card (ok, it's 6 years old, but it works fine, good for old IDEs), Echo Mia soundcard, 1900xt beta drivers (BSOD after install, they are RC1 though admittedly),

Vista detects my P5b deluxe's sound chip, but the first install it got the front and rear mike ports mixed up - result=no recording. I tried to install 64-bit Soundmax drivers, that failed. Reinstalled the default ones and now it has the mike inputs correct.

Unless you are an NTFS permissions expert, you're not going to want this OS. And you really don't want 64-bit unless you are prepared for driver hassles up the wazoo.

I get a kick out of everybody saying "You don't want Vista, it sucks - I'll stick with XP til it's dead etc."

I guarantee within 6 months, 90% of all of you will be running Vista very happily and loving it. Knowing, you really didn't have a whole lot of choice in the matter. SUCH IS THE NATURE OF THE BEAST - Vista is no different.

Vista is here to stay. It friggin rocks under the hood - especially in the TCP/IP department. Yeah it takes getting used to, but do you really have a choice? Get used to it and quit hating the inevitable.

Hmmm...I can't wait to run vista, but the only problem is being able to warrant the purchase of it or not. I hate going through the whole activation shit again.

Yeah, the price is getting a little absurd. And Microsoft wonders why people steal their OS's at $399 a pop.

I agree completely, most of the haters will be running the OS one way or another soon enough.

People steal it because they're lazy ignorant bastards - it has nothing to do with the price. Considering the OS is the heart of using a computer in the first place, and Microsoft (and Apple, by the way) spend considerable amounts of money to give you an operating system that's a one-time cost to you and a continuous sinkhole of money for them, we're lucky both of them aren't charging even more for their products.

Grow up, get a job, stop whining about the cost and be happy. If you don't want it, run Linux or some other free OS, but stop bitching about the cost. And for the predictable "I have a job" replies, great, earn your money, and pay for the software and keep Microsoft and all the derivative people involved in jobs so they can live too.

Geezus, you babies...

There are ways of getting your message across but swearing isnt one of them. You are very right about the work and then it being priced to what it is but say it in a way that youdont swear , you will see people listening to you better if they are not threatened.

The Core 2 Duo supports EM64T as all modern Intel CPUs do. I have already run mine with Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, so I can tell you for a fact that the EM64T works.

The quote you quoted just became that much more relevant because it's true. As for swearing, I did no such thing, and thanks for reading it anyway. People are lazy ignorant bastards, that much is a fact. They want it all handed to them on a silver platter, with someone else picking up the tab, simple.

Yea, $399 a pop is a bit pricey. Especially when you consider that + MS Office that is almost a grand..hahah

I am trying to save up for the next Photoshop CS3 ahaha

Is it really going to be around $400? I like the ultimate RC1 I have running now, but $400 is a bit too much, even if it IS the most complicated thing made by man.

according to various sources, the retail version will be $400. OEM may be priced differently.

This is basically the point I was trying to make before bbz crapped himself in a tangent.

I don't condone stealing and never suggested it, so bbz, you can take your comments and nasty-ass attitude elsewhere.

That said, I'll be buying it as soon as it's out.

I tried it on my new system and it isnt having it , apparently its blaming the bios for it , it is a new board .Try some more tomoz

That's retail for Vista Ultimate Edition. You can probably get the same thing as an OEM copy for around $200 I'm guessing.

People who pay retail pricing for OSes are retarded.

Ha. That is so damn true. I could never figure out why people do that, other than the regular Best Buy goers.

It is because people don't understand that there are cheaper and completely legal ways to buy software than going to a retail store. People will do more research on microwave ovens than they will on what products they purchase for their computer. Even though Windows costs a considerable amount more than their microwaves usually will.

I actually think that the huge gap between retail and OEM pricing is absurd. I understand the actual differences in the licensing between the two, and I think you should pay more for the retail versions, but not 2-2.5x more.

I only buy OEM, but a lot of people buy retail - I have no idea why.

XP Pro's about $140ish..so Vista Ultimate will be well over $200..I guess we'll find out. :)

Do they sell OEM upgrades? I was looking at the Home Premium upgrade for like $160. I'm pretty sure that was retail though.

Also, isn't Microsoft crippling pirated Windows Vista copies?

Yes, they will be crippling pirated copies the last I heard. I'm all for that.

You can perform upgrade installations with OEM copies, but there are no upgrade copies that can be purchased even cheaper as far as I know. OEM copies though are full versions intended to be purchased with the purpose of being used on a new PC. OEM copies generally have to be purchased with hardware in order to fullfil the licensing agreement for the OS.

You can actually purchase an OEM copy of Windows to go along with your $3 mouse if that's what you want to do.
