Window redraw problems w/ 9800 Pro

I download the Catalyst 4.7 drivers beening that I haven't updated for awhile. When I re-booted I noticed that the window would refresh/redraw from the top and slowly work its way down. I re-booted to see if that helped and again the same problem. I hit the forums and saw Catalyst 4.9 betas were out and so I downloaded and tried those. The issue still remains. It should be noted that I run my res. at 1280x1024 and that is the max resolution for this monitor (KDS Avitron). The refresh rate at this resolution is maxed out at 60. I don't think it is the monitor being that everything was fine in older Catalyst versions.

System Specs:
ATI 9800 Pro (128)
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
AMD 2800 "Barton"
512 MB PC3200
 
That sounds like the default windows xp drivers to me. Are you 100% sure it's using the new drivers? I noticed when you first install Windows XP it does exactly as you described, but the moment I install the video drivers things run nice and smooth.
 
The following was listed under the Radeon 9800 Pro properties:
Driver Provider: ATI Technologies Inc.

I see. Well, maybe try one of those driver cleaner things. Still worth a shot eh? And, just for the heck of it, use the Omega drivers (never once had any problem with those and they give you more options.)
 
It may be that your other driver is still running, id install it and them make sure that the catalyst is enabled in the device manager.
 
I have heard about these Omega drivers, but I'm not sure what they are? Are ATI drivers or a hacked Catalyst made by someone else?
 
The official site for these is omegadrivers.net (used to be omegacorner, don't know why they suddenly change after so long.) Basically they take the official drivers, fix up a few things here and there and enable all the hidden options as well as adding a useful tool or two.
 
I tried the Omega drivers and I still get the slow refresh/redraw issue. I'm going to find an older set of drivers for the time being.
 
Geez. This is getting troublesome. Well, try to find one of those driver cleaners, use that, then reinstall those omega drivers. Oh, and the drivers have some kind of AGP control. Make sure it's set as high as it goes on your board. And be sure fast writes are off. Apparently that causes troubles.

EDIT: Oh, and maybe first install the very latest drivers for your board.


Beyond all this, I'm just out of ideas for now. BTW, how do games run? It wouldn't surprise me if it's bad, but, just to be sure, run a game and see what happens.
 
what monitor are you running with and did you do a full reinstall of the OS yet? I apologize if you have already. :D

An os reinstallation is a bit extremeist. It would probably solve the problem, but not a good solution. For one, it's a big pain to reinstall over every little thing like that. For another there's nothing preventing the problem from just repeating in the future.
 
I tried the driver cleaner and reinstalled the Catalyst 4.7's and what do you know everything works fine!

I just want to thank everyone that helped me out, especially Nazo.
 
I'm glad to hear it worked out for you. Sounds to me like the old drivers were causing conflicts. I've heard of this happening, but never saw it on my pc, so had no idea what they actually could do.

Really, we should all be using the cleaners when updating our drivers, but most of us are too lazy. Lol, I bet you aren't though, not after this.

Its funny you say that, because I uninstalled the drivers using the ATI uninstaller in the control panel. Then I ran the driver cleaner and was surpised in the amount of files still laying around in various places. You are right, I will scrub everything clean before installing new drivers.
