No, I assumed that since you used the word "Applique" we were *not* talking about etching ... cause that's called "etching" ;)

Are you trying to make your own sticker or apply one you purchased somewhere to your case window?
 
I'm thinking he is talking about the stickers that crazypc.com sell that apply and look etched, but...actually aren't so there's no permanent harm done to a window.

Unfortunately, I have nothing to contribute since i have no idea how they make em. lol

Maybe they use really thin vinyl that allows some light to pass through and etch lightly into that with an exacto knife, essentially in the same fashion of etching though. Just a guess, however!
 
I owned a sticker kit like that ^^^^^. It was basically just that, a sticker. It was clear, but the design was a translucent gray that made it appear like an etching.
 
Well, I'm not sure, but here's my take on applying it:

Line it up on your window however you want, check for squareness etc.
Peel off the backing on one end, just enough to get started.
Slowly apply it and use something like a credit card to gently smooth the air bubbles out by working them to the edges.
Work your way slowly up through the rest of the applique until it's on.

As for making your own, I guess you could go to the aforementioned crazypc.com, or you may want to talk to a sign shop.

Now, I don't think the two things are related, but if someone has experience (or spare materials)... When a cousin of mine put window tint on his trucks, he would spray the window with soapy water to help get the bubbles out. Would that work with appliques as well, or would the soap + water eat away the adhesive?
 
I think it depends on the adhesive they use if soap and water would wash it away. It shouldn't however. Window tint has an adhesive on the back as well, the soap and water just creates a layer that allows the tint to slide to you can push bubbles out without using a razor to cut them out. It also allows you to move it so it's not a one try thing.

As far as making your own you could look around for a clear vinyl film used to insulate windows. To get the etched look make a stencil and look for a spray paint that is an etched glass look. I beleive dupli-color makes one but not sure. It's an alternative, but I'm not sure how it would stick to the vinyl, it might rib off easy or worse yet not even bond at all. the paint is more for glass and acrylic/lexan.
