Hi guys, got a puzzle for you.

My aunts system is hosed, it wont boot into windows, somwhere on the "welcome" screen it just hangs, same thing in safe mode. However, if i select debug mode in the F8 menu, it just starts up.

I've already done a small survey of the registry and tried running AVG, but halfway through the system just hangs.

The sucky part is that she doesnt have the restore discs for this old packard Hell anymore, and she need legit windows (she has enough trouble staying clean with windows updates available)

So, any tips?

Is there an XP coa sticker on the system? If so, use an OEM XP cd and reinstall the OS.

There is a windows sticker on there, and the discs might be lost (and im under the impression that this license key would need a PB specific disc to work)

So if possible, i would like to solve this without a reinstall

Try doing a system restore while in debug mode, or reinstalling all the drivers... but it safe-mode doesn't work, something is hosed pretty badly. And no, a generic OEM XP disc will work with that key. You'll just have to call in to MS's activation hotline since online activation is most likely blocked.

I tried system restore several times, up to a few months back, doesnt do anything.

I'll see about reinstalling anyway, this machine is pretty damn hosed

If you get a disc (i don't think you'll need an oem disc for the repair but for reinstall yes) you could try a repair install first then you don't have to worry about activating but if that doesn't work you'll probably have to reinstall windows.

I think you have to have an OEM disc for repair as well. If I remember right, a repair install still asks for the product key.

Start the computer and go to Run and type MSCONFIG

You should see the option: Normal startup, click that.

Now go to the services tab and click 'hide all Microsoft services'. Now click disable all.

Now go to the Startup tab and click disable all. Restart the computer.

If it starts up, this means the computer is fine and that it's software issue on start up.

If it doesn't start, when in debug mode, drop in an XP disc. Go to CMD line and type in:

SFC /scannow
