i have an old gateway that was running win98se. i have the system restoration disc from gateway and my cd key on the manual. i reformatted the harddrive, but when i tried to reinstall windows, my cd wouldn't work. this guy i know burned me a copy of his "win98se installl disc" and i was going to use MY cd key with it. this isn't illegal, correct? well during setup it asked for my cd key and i entered it, but it keeps telling me the key is invalid. does this mean the guy may have burned me win98 first edition? how can i deal with this?

The cd keys that gateway supplied on win98 machines wont work with all 98 media ...for example a corportate image key wont work with a OEM disc and vice versa.

Not all media is created the same...

and No what your doing is not illegal if you get a media disc that works.. all your doing is put the OS back on your machine.

thanks, i'll email him and ask him if he has the key for the version he burned me, then once it's installed i can go into the registry and change the key to mine.
