This is only something i just recently noticed, but what the hell is going on here. What part of my system needs 770Mb all to itself?

edit: Using W7 x64

That is very strange. I've never seen anything like it before. My system only has 1MB marked as Reserve. It really looks like it's a 32bit OS installed, but your post says otherwise.

The only time I've seen such behavior with x64 OS's is if there's a BIOS option for a "memory hole" or "memory remap" which is enabled. You may want to check for this.

Unfortunately there is no memory remapping feature in my bios. However in the past when i upgraded from 32 to 64 i DID have use of all my memory. Perhaps one of the recent windows updates had something to do with it?

Do you have the latest BIOS for that board?

What about running a dxdiag? Maybe it is reserving that RAM for the video card.. not sure why it would though. What version of drivers are you using on that 4870?

Yeah i got the latest BIOS revision if you could call it that(11/06/07), and im using 10.2 drivers for the 4870. In dxdiag it says 4096 RAM.

Googling for "windows 7 memory hardware reserved", I found this brief thread in which someone stated they found a solution. And I quote: "Apparently the problem was setting number of processors and memory for booting in msconfig caused this."

Bingo, this was it. I did alot of googling and i never saw this, and i definitely don't remember setting that in msconfig.

It seems a lot of people run into this problem. What on earth is causing windows to set this setting for limiting memory or cpu's?

I followed the link and both boxes were NOT checked, but I still show 514MB reservered for hardware. Is this normal or should it be a much smaller amount?

By comparison, my PC, with an Intel E6600 dual-core, 2GB of RAM and a GTX 275 running Win7 64-bit has 3MB of "Hardware Reserved" memory.

When I run msconfig, go to the Boot tab and click "Advanced Options...", the "Number of processors" box and "Maximum memory" box are unchecked. The "PCI Lock" and "Debug" boxes are also unchecked, which greys out the rest of the settings.

The greyed out default of "Number of processors" was 1, and if I turned it on, the choices were 1 or 2. The "Maximum memory" greyed out default choice was 0, and when I turned it on, it automatically chose 2048. I hit cancel to prevent either of those choices from happening.

Back in the regular Boot tab, all checkboxes are not selected (including "Safe boot", "No GUI boot", "Make all boot settings permanent", etc.)

I should also mention that the reserved memory really isn't causing me any problems since I have 6GB anyways, but it seems odd that I don't have those boxes checked and it is still using all that memory. Not sure what to think honestly, as I'm not exactly sure what it is being used for.
