I recently purchased 2 Sandisk Extreme 240gb SSDs for a great price ($130 each). I'm using this purchase as a motivation to finally install Windows 7 in place of Vista (yeah, i know). When I try to install Win7, the SSDs do not show up on the list of available drives. Also when in Vista, the drives are not recognized. I've changed my sata setting in my BIOS from IDE to AHCI and I've read that DVD installs can have problems with that, so I've also tried booting the Install from a flash drive without success. My motherboard is a Gigabyte ex58-ud3r rev 1.0 with the latest non-beta BIOS.

What now?

Also, since my motherboard is sata2 3gb/s, is it worth getting a PCI-e Sata3 6gb/s card?

Are your drives on the Intel controller ? Do you not see them in the drive manager ?

No it's not worth it getting a SATA3 card.

The drives are plugged into the SATA2_0 and SATA2_1 ports and not the GSATA2 ports if that's what you mean.

I do not see them in drive manager nor can I find them from the command prompt.

try the

"Intel SATA Preinstall driver
(For AHCI / RAID Mode)
Note: Press F6 during Windows setup to read from floppy."

drivers ... when you are trying to install win7 (load drivers) option

had to load the SATA drivers with my Crucial M4 w/ my Gigabyte Z68 board when trying to install win7 with it.

no luck :(

Does the BIOS see the drives at all? Can't really think of any other reasons for the issue. Tried different power/data cables by any chance? Small chance that's the issue, but process of elimination never hurt.

nope, BIOS does not see the drives at all. The cables are new, but I will try swapping them tomorrow. I need to take a break from this.

Well, I figured out that I had a bad sata power cable. Fortunately, my power supply is modular, so I just swapped it out. The BIOS and windows now recognize the drives. I an going to try installing win 7 again tomorrow.

Cool you sorted it. I was going to say update the firmware on the SSDs.

I had a Sandisk Extreme SSD last week that I couldn't get to install until it had the latest firmware. Once I had flashed the firmware it worked a treat.
