WIN7 and O'clocking, vs XP?

OK< so I am ready to go to Win7 from XP

my E8600 is at 4.3 Ghz rock solid for about 2 years
is 7 overclock friendly will I be able to run the same CPU speed?
Win7 allow higher o'clocks or hold me back?
 
If your overclock is truly stable, then you should have no trouble maintaining it in Windows 7.
 
windows 7 is a little tougher on cpu's.. especially if your using 64bit.. but like zero said if its completely stable it should be fine.. i just recommend you default the bios before installing windows 7 then put the overclock back..

It has nothing to do with stability and everything to do with avoiding more possible points of failure during the installation. An OS installation is something that you want to be foolproof, so you should always take steps to ensure that it goes as smoothly as possible, even if those steps are not explicitly necessary.

If one has issues, I can see undoing it, but if like me, it just works, why add more steps?

Do that many people have issues installing an OS on an OC? Your post is the first time I've even seen this mentioned.
 
its your stuff do what you want. But it takes about 30 seconds to turn down the FSB in the bios and reboot.

Yes, it can and has been done a zillion times but you can listen to the voice of experience or not, your call. It is just not a good idea unless you know the system. I am especially talking about a system you have OCed in the bios and are installing the OS for the first time.
 
I've installed W7 once or twice with my computer OC'd. Never really crossed my mind about it possibly failing, makes sense though. ;)

However would it really matter? I mean are you not limited by DVD read and HDD write times not the cpu speed?

And yes I agree it's not that hard to change it :D

Oc'in will work just great in W7, plus you'll (at least I did) have the "wow" factor from going to W7 from XP

Geez if youre installing from dvd anymore you have to much time on youre hands. Why wait use a flash drive.

It takes about half an hour to install an OS from a DVD. Considering how infrequently I actually install OSes on my main PCs, it's not worth the effort to set up a USB drive to install from.
 
Windows 7 itself isn't any harder on OCs. It's the fact that most XP installs are 32bit while the majority of 7 installs are now 64bit. 64bit uses additional parts of your CPU, which puts additional strain on the chip. That is why most people who overclocked with XP have had to reduce speeds when upgrading. The only way around this is to upgrade to 32bit Windows 7, but doesn't make much sense for an enthusiast these days. As for installing OS while overclocked, I agree it's bad form, but I did it recently with no problems. As long as you actually stress test the OC, you shouldn't have any problems.

I know this is really a matter of opinion and one would just do what works for them, but I ALWAYS install my OS with my intended oc because as others have said, if the OS won't install I wouldn't consider the system stable.
