so i was goin to be using freenas for my NAS, but i still had stuff to setup and whatnot on the box b4 the final move. so i had 3 250gb disks and setup them as dynamic discs, then just created a raid 5 volume. its about 479gb total, not bad

so where are my raid tools in win2k3? would it be better to make my move to freenas ans be rid of windows (runnin my site/email/stuff on freebsd)

anybody used raid 5 software in win2k3 server yet? how is it?

running on a halfway decent box, 1.33ghz amd athlon and 1gb ram on a msi kt3 ultra board :)

comments, suggestions?

im also planning on adding 4 120gb disks, and i might just do those on win2k3 software raid 5 as well if things work out

Im using software raid5 in my FS in sign. Works great, its easy to move the arrays to different hardware and so on plus the speed is quite nice actually. You dont get much raidtools in Windows, the only things that are useful are in the DiskManager. I use Win2k3 case its a familiar enviroment for me, Id like to try FreeBSD but I cant make myself work on something thats already working the way I want it to work. I got no complaints. Just remember that software raidperformance is based a lot on the cpu.

I do not know what you mean by `a lot', but in most recent systems, the bottleneck for software RAID-5 is most likely the I/O speed.

yes, the main reason i want to go with freenas is because i have a bit of expetreince with freebsd. been running it as my www/email/mysql/php yadda etc website, and its been doin great http://p3n1x.is-a-geek.com:999 and freenas being bsd is familiar

but i have an existing setup with 3 win2k3 boxes, 1 of which is 99% likely to be converted to freenas, but the other 2 espically my 'main' one id like to keep it on win2k3

ive transferred about 260gb to it so far....its been well near 10 hours, and its not done yet....its running at about 40/50mbits which....isnt all that bad supposing....i came from the days of 10mbit so its not too shabby really.

is this what to expect? is freenas raid 5 software any faster?

I use Windows 2k3 and raid on my file server and really really like, i have had problems with a drive and the data and the array came right through.... I would highly recommend Windows 2k3 with software raid 5:)

I've changed drives when they failed and so on with Win 2k3 so everything that I need really works, however the overall speed might be what puts you off. 50-60mbit is very slow if you ask me, the system in my sign usually do 50-70Mb per second (1gb of data takes 15 to 25 seconds to write depending on size and amount of files) but I also use eight disks per array which is supposed to increase speed dramatically.
