Is it a bad idea to have your boot partition be on a RAID array? It would be through an ABIT BX133-RAID motherboard (highpoint controller?). We also have an adaptec SCSI (AHA-2940) host card that we could use, do those support RAID? we need to buy new hard drives, so trying to decide the best route. I know I want raid-0.

That's a bad idea if it's anything important.

If you want the speed of RAID 0, but with the redundancy of RAID 1, use RAID 0+1.

my mistake, I meant RAID 1 for mirroring. I was thinking of getting 2 of the 40GB seagate IDE drives from newegg for $60. CDW also has them for $70, so I may just go there tonight.

That's fine, but RAID 1 is not an excuse to have no backups, so remember to keep up to date.

Your read speeds are going to be wonderful, but the write speeds won't be so hot, as the controller (or software, if you decide to use dynamic disks - bad idea in my book) has to write the data to both disks.

heh.. they let me off work early to go get the drives. We had a hard drive failure in the server, and win NT 4 wouldnt boot. Luckily i was able to put the drive in a winXP box and get it to work, and copy the files over to another drive. The tape backups are all from a program called ArcServe2000, by computer associates. whoever built the computer sold them a lot of high end software they don't need (only 8 people in the office). We can't find the disc for ArcServe though, so the tapes (2 weeks of dailies) are useless. I'm going to put on win2k server and just use the built-in tape backup software, its nothing more than a file server anyway.
