im trying to setup win xp on a friends computer and it goes through everything up to where it restarts then it wont complete. it restarts installation. can anyone help?

When you say everything up to where it restarts, do you mean after it formats and copies the setup files and you're still in the ugly blue setup screens, or in the graphical setup screen when it actually installs windows and you configure the network and stuff?

If it's the second case, have you tried removing the CD when it restarts? It should give you an option to boot to the CD and not do it by itself, but maybe that's not happening or something. Might be worth a try I guess.

I believe the phrase is, throw us a bone here... ;) What install method? Winnt32, Boot off of CD, Dos floppy with Winnt, windows boot floppies? What flavor of Windows XP, Does it restart into Gui Mode, Text Mode(looks like dos), OOBE(Has the Agent character Question Mark), Or windows login screen. Is this an upgrade or clean install?

Make sure you only press any key to boot from CD the first time through. After it tells you that your computer must restart and gives you the red progress bar, just let it reboot normally and do not press any key upon bootup.

Take the disk out after the reboot. Otherwise, more information would be nice.
