win xp not recocnizing cd-rom drives????

OK im trying to fix my mother in laws Comp.. her cd writer was not working, not even the door was opening on it, so i told her to get a new one from newegg so she did, there is also a regular cd-rom drive.. so she has two cd drives. so i went to install the new cd writer and windows comes up with an error saying it cannot install the drive due to two faulty drivers.. and it listed the drivers.. so i searched for the drivers and deleted both of them.. then rebooted and now windows wont recognize either disk drives???
ive tried unistalling them in device manager and reistalling them.. ive tried them in different Master/slave positions.. also cable select..??/

windows will not install the drivers for them??
the computer originally had Millenium then she bought the xphome edition upgrade and installed it.. so i dont know what to do ..

i would just reformat but she has a ton of Digi. pics that she wants on disc , which was the purpose of buying the cd writer..
 
If you absoloutely need to reformat after www.hriders.com is offering 1 TB(thats right, a terabyte) of free email storage, with 500mb email attachments. If worst comes to worst you could always compress the files and keep them stored there. Sorry i couldn't be of more help. I use that site as my TB hard drive :p
