Win 7 vs Win 8

At Windows 8's launch, yes. 8 months later, with more mature drivers, the story is different. I'm certainly seeing better performance on my PC using 8 than I was with 7.
 
Windows 7 or Windows 8? You can't really go wrong with either of them. I'd say Windows 8 is probably the better way to go unless you're terribly unequipped for dealing with changes. It pretty much supersedes Windows 7, and if you aren't a fan of the new UI, that can be dealt with without any real backache.

Apparently it's 1997 still. Either way, I'm always terribly surprised by the things I hear people saying around here sometimes.
 
I'm sticking with Windows 7. I played with Windows 8 and 8.1. If I don't love the OS after an hour of using it, its not worth my time to switch. So far I've put in 4 hours worth and I'm not a fan...

To each their own though.
 
I would say give Win 8 a try. The metro apps can be useful, it's nice knowing I can browse the store, download and try anything I want, and not worry about infections, slow downs, corruptions, etc. because metro apps are tightly sandboxed, and vetted. While the apps are simple, there are many nice and free ones, I find clicking my start menu, and getting things like weather, mail count, news updates, and so on, all the while without risks or slowdowns to my system, is great. If you find you're one of those people that can't stand it, you can always install a free win 7-esque start menu program, there really is no down side to using Win 8. The under the hood improvements, while not major and probably not understandable by most, I personally really enjoy as well, but I won't get into them since it's a gamer thread.

Like most here have said, it is all about the interface. I got a laptop with Win 8, and made sure the drivers for 7 were fully available.
I tried 8 for 3 days. As I did not have a touch screen, it was awful. IF, however, you decide to have a touch screen (yes, you can have a touch screen on any platform, including desktop) then 8 would be ok. There is some klunkiness, and some things just flat out done wrong, which is very typical of Micro$oft, when they attempt to force aspects on the general public.
However, if you have a touch screen, somethings are fine, and work well. I hope the 8.1 update puts 8 where it was supposed to be at launch.
Honestly, that is the rub with Micro$oft, when they launch a new OS, you can guarantee something is broken, and not fixed before they launch. You basically almost have to wait for the first major update to get the OS as intended. (Vista's service pack made it very workable. I hope 8.1 does same.)

While I know that things are different in 8 I just don't see the need for a touch screen, plenty of people use 8 just fine with a mouse and keyboard. That's not to say things don't need improvement on the keyboard and mice end and there has been a good bit of work to make Windows 8.1 more keyboard and mouse friendly. I admit that the hot corners are probably the biggest issue with keyboards and mice on a multiple monitor system. It takes some practice to hit the interior corners on multiple monitor systems. Getting this issue resolved would solve the biggest issue I still see outstanding with keyboards and mice in 8.x.

After playing around with Windows 8.1 over the weekend, if MS made it easier to actually tweak your program folders, the new "Start" button really would work well for most users.
Unfortunately, you have to find the start menu folders in 2 different places to actually tweak anything. There should be some way using the customize function to add, delete, and move programs from one folder to another...easily.

Because Linux still has hardware compatibility issues (I shouldn't have to go buy new hardware to make it work) and because games. ndiswrapper is hack with too many bugs.

Not sure if serious, but I guess someone can get used to one application. IE still maintains over a 55% share worldwide (non-mobile), which I don't get outside of "comfort zone" reasons. But it's not too shocking that many people still use IE. /no skin off my back

IE10 is a pretty decent browser. I can see why people would be satisfied enough with it. Previous versions, though... no thanks.

I have to use Chrome, Firefox and IE. Prefer the latter, looks better and enjoys tighter integration with Windows. When a sh*t load of unwanted browser plugins/add-ons/extensions accompanies some freebie installation, it's just a matter of sorting "programs and features" on date and uninstalling for IE. Can't say the same for the rest. Chrome and Firefox are severely overrated IMO.
