I am in the process of buying a new rig and being a big gamer I was looking to get some opinions on which os is best for gaming-7 or 8? Thanks

There should be little to no difference for gaming. The core of both Operating Systems are basically the same.
It really comes down to the interface. Windows 7 is made for a mouse and keyboard, while Windows 8 is made for touch. Using a mouse and keyboard with Windows 8 is downright awkward. It's really your call as to how bad that might annoy you.

Download the trial version of 8, give it a spin, if the Start Screen doesn't really work for you, try out a few of those start menu programs, most are free or have free trials.

The 8.1 Preview comes out Wednesday, might be a good time to seen what everyone thinks about the changes, a lot has gone into making things more keyboard and mouse friendly and there may still be a few things more yet to come.

Both perform similarly for gaming. Though I prefer and use win7, win8 isn't all that bad once you get used to it.
I guess you missed this part in his post?
Linux may be able to play some games, quite a few actually, but it can also be quite a pain in the ass to get certain games to work properly.
OP, it's pretty much that same performance wise in gaming. It all comes down to user preference like others have said.
Most Windows-only games work okay in WINE, with some minor tweaking.
Lots of indie games (Minecraft, etc) have Linux/Ubuntu editions.
Also, don't forget that Steam is available for Ubuntu now. If you don't know what Steam is, Steam is the main software for many of today's popular PC games.

Lol, this is [H] we all know what Steam is. Not all games in the Steam library work on Linux though, at least through the native Steam install.
We can tell by your username that your a big Linux person but the OP asked about Windows 7 and 8, not anything else. I personally have no issues with someone wanting to use Linux as I have dabbled in it a bit myself but the OP didn't ask about that option.
The two games I couldnt get to work in windows 8 was Titan Quest and hotline miami, the single player works but multiplayer does not. Hotline miami dev is working on a fix, Titan Quest dev said no update for windows 8.
Any problems with windows 8 will be related to the devs and not windows 8 itself.
With that said I say windows 8. It has all the new updates/optimizations and will get more, Win 7 is EOL and does not offer anything over windows 8.

Older games that need direct x 9 or earlier might have some issues with windows 8. I"ve read that you can get around it and load 9c but am not positive it will work with all of the older games. I messed with it for 10 minutes or so trying to get a arcade model 2 emulator to work and it wouldn't although I haven't taken a second look(I was setting up a notebook to throw in a mame cabinet for a friend when his went down for a party).
Past that I really don't have an issue with windows 8. I run it in a VM on my desktop(mac) to run outlook 2013 and some other apps and have a hp probook running it as well. You can always put classic shell or start 8 if you miss the start button.

Windows 8 is essentially Windows 7 with a few under-the-hook tweaks to improve performance, and with the ability to support the new platform for metro style applications. Chances are on a desktop system you'll never touch the metro apps but I like knowing I can run them if I chose, and should development move towards them there may be a day where an app I want is /only/ released in win8/metro form. Of course the UI has its quirks but personally I like the start screen. The main complaint people have is caused by them still viewing the desktop as "home", which is no longer true with 8. Of course being Windows it can run however you want- and there are tons of tools to replace the start menu of old, or offer new ways of launching and managing your programs.
As for the Ubuntu dude- I've tried several linux distros and for a while Kubuntu nearly became my primary OS on my desktop. What bugged me though was support from devs for big titles such as games. Sure WINE can add support for many win32 applications (doesn't emulate them- Wine is not an emulator) but I found myself questioning why I was running a game under Linux with several settings turned down or disabled to allow for the limitations of WINE and the then quite poor nVidia driver when I could jump back into my Windows install and play natively. Hopefully Linux will become popular enough for native games to be developed for it to the same degree they are for Windows, but until that date no Linux distro will be a gamer's primary OS.

You know the worst thing about linux community really is the way you continuously lie to yourselves and especially to the users who you try to lure into using linux.
Even if you get someone to try some gaming title on Wine only to see it crash or malfunction horribly at 12 fps, it's going to do nothing but negative experiences.
Especially people with ATI hardware are simply not going to be able to run 90% of windows games on wine, at all! I've hoped for many many years that the promises of compatibility would become true and I could ditch windows even in gaming use - but that's just crack talk at the moment and for the foreseeable future also.

Wow. Just WOW! Nobody should use IE in any circumstance. Not only it's the contributing factor to the majority of online infections on Windows, it's a horrible abomination of a browser who continues to give heartburn to any web developer alive.

Maybe if one is still on IE 6, IE 10 has received pretty good press for security.

What year is this? Are you going to piss and moan about vista next? The new ie isn't bad at all. It might not have all of the features as other browsers but its a huge improvement over the older versions.
I agree, but I would never go back to Windows just because of IE.

Lol it's still IE which means it does not abide to standards. IE is evil. Not to mention how clunky the latest version is to use. Haven't seen a worse user interface ever in a browser.

First of all English is not my native language - how many languages do YOU master flawlessly and fluently?
Second the 'who -> which' mistake had nothing to do with the argument so stop trolling.
Just go with Win7. MSFT will need some time to sort out WTH they want to do with Win8 anyway. Might as well go with the stable OS on which all games work without issues, unlike Win8 which is just different enough to give issues.

for me its the best OS ever created as my desktop and gaming experience is flawless for what I use the machine for.
its just smooth sailing, fast, direct and works.
One button pressed and I have a visual overview of all the programs installed, can it be faster?

Windows 7 hands down. It is the latest desktop OS from Microsoft. 8 is not something I'd actually consider on a production system. It would be kinda neat for a kiosk type setup at a mall or something though.

There's no much difference between windows 7 and 8. Windows 7 is made for mouse and keyboard while Windows 8 is good for touch screens. In my own opinion they both works the same on gaming.
Either version of Windows doesn't really matter for gaming. Both will work similarly. The choice comes down to what you like/dislike about each OS for other purposes and/or software/hardware compatibility.
Windows comes with many systems for essentially no charge (subsidized by crapware), so price is not really a concern; IOW, a laptop without an OS, or with Linux installed, often has no price advantage.
While Linux is a perfectly fine option for some users, it's a terrible suggestion for a gamer.
Did you read the OP's post? Gaming is a primary concern, and Ubuntu has a much more limited selection, mostly miss WINE (or similar) support, and generally takes a large performance hit on the relatively few games that are even playable via WINE. Then you can start on the other problems with device support and the fragility of the OS when applying updates.

Do yourself a favor install windows 7 os. I do use windows 8 as primary os on my touchscreen laptop and like it. However, if you have a desktop avoid windows 8 like the plague it's a joke on any non touch screen system.
You can launch the game in either 7 or 8. Once you are in the game it doesn't matter if the 8 ui is clunky or not. I have 8 (now 8.1) on a touch laptop. I know two Senior Citizens who use 8 on non touch all in ones. They don't seem to have a problem. Probably, most of the people here can get by with either 7 or 8.
That being said, I haven't bothered to upgrade my 7 systems to 8. Its doable but not compelling. Price for each would enter into it for me. I use Linux a lot, but using it for gaming is kind of like using a Mac. Possible, but not compelling either.

That's your opinion. I like Windows 8 on my triple monitor setup just fine.

Windows 8 is a like a version with extensions and few bells and whistles that make it shine.
It could of been done better but if you skip Metro with 8.1 it shouldn't be any different then 7.
I don't think it's worth 199.00 though when people got it for 1/4 of that price at launch.

Under the hood, Windows 8 is better than Windows 7, and games seem to perform better on 8 over 7.
Just get some start menu replacement that lets you boot to desktop, or hold out for Windows 8.1. For strictly gaming purposes, there's little reason to remain on 7, IMO.

Good these things can be objectively measured.
There's generally no difference in gaming performance between 7 and 8, but to split minor differences, Windows 7 performs slightly better.
