Early 2009, I was running one tray client and switched to running the SMP client set at 80%. (Chart here) My PPD jumped up like triple, but since then the PC never seemed to recover it's speed whenever I'd use it and the client was ALWAYS running at 80% in my task manager. This definitely created issues, and the wife acceptance factor was not acceptable. Now I've freshly installed Win7 and she's in love with how well the PC is running again and I can't really get away with killing the speed so much.

My question...using the box in my sig... is there a suggested way to get the most PPD with the least fuss, and still keep performance on the box up when someone wants to use it? Tray clients (how do I set up more than one)? A different way to set up the SMP client? Is one SMP better than the other (was using the MPICH client - not that I know why - it was just the one at the top of the list)?

I want to get up and going again, but I could use some sound suggestions.

You have got a quad, why don't you set up notfred using 2 cores in a vmware session? That should get you about 2500ppd and you would still have 2 cores to make the wife happy :). Instructions for this are in the Guide sticky.

The only issue I can think of is to make sure you have enough RAM. The VM will eat a gig.
 
I agree with Puppet. Run notfreds using 2 cores. You won't even know it's there.
 
3 gigs of RAM should be plenty for one VM, but what kind of graphics are you running? A somewhat recent nVidia card can get plenty of points without slowing the system down at all.
