I don't have a dummy plug and I have no problems running 2 gpu2 clients.
260 #2 has nothing hooked up to it at all. 195.62 forceware
I think dummy plugs are a thing of the past.

I've ran Vista and Win7 with 2 cards, 2 clients, no dummy plugs and no problems.
In all cases, my 2nd card had nothing hooked up to it...no monitor, no dummy plugs.
I thought Vista needed them, Win7 didn't...then again I ran Vista for a long time without them and I didn't have any trouble, so....meh. YMMV

I did and I have two Win 7 machines with two cards each. Both require dummy plugs and on all cards when there's no monitor attached. This is the first I read about not needing dummy plugs in Win 7 or Vista. I believe you but don't understand why your system is different.

vista64 here, I definitely need the dummy plug on my second 260. Without it, vista will not expand my display to the second card, making the second gpu client unable to run. Its really, really easy to do as long as you have spare dvi to vga converters and some 75 or 100 ohm resistors. It takes about as much effort and brainpower to make them as it does to plug them in.

You can see both cards are running, SLi is disabled, and the desktop is not extended to a 2nd monitor. I have nothing hooked up to the outputs on card #2.
Maybe it's a Win7 thing or a new driver thing, but here's proof that it's not necessary.
(in w7x64 at least)(not that I'm doubting anyone or anyone running Vista but I can say the same setup worked under Vista as well, only difference was I ran both cards on a P45 board) On this x58, I do have the SLi bridge installed connecting the cards, but SLi is disabled in the driver. On the P45, I didn't bridge the cards since SLi wasn't possible in that case. That board was a P45-UD3P, this is an X58A-UD3R. Same cards. In Vista64, the desktop was not extended on card 2 and nothing was hooked up to card 2. (ran Vista up until probably 3-4 months ago)

It appears that his cards are not overclocked, and he most likely has one of the 548-point units which produce low PPD.

They're both running superclocked, but yeah - based on what point units each card gets, the PPD that HFM reports goes up and down.

I haven't changed the priority settings on anything. I didn't really think about doing that...
I didn't really think about doing that... With priority, I just have the GPUs run a higher setting to prevent them from starving for CPU cycles and then set whatever else I'm folding with to a lower setting. That way I get maximum performance from my GPUs. You will need an affinity utility to set this correctly.
why would you need a utility? folding has idle/low build in

Cuz sometimes it doesn't work, or a background app will be higher and steal some CPU

It also lets you lock your GPU to a single core of your multi-core processor. You may be able to get a little more out of your CPU folding if the GPU doesn't bounce around to the different cores.

I dunno if im late to this convo.... BUT,
You do not need dummy plugs to run Windows 7 and Multipul GPU2 clients AFTER you update Windows 7 with all the latest patches and updates.
Micro$oft was very VERY fast on fixing this issue, which amazed me, but it was actually a problem with the intergration between Windows 7 AND DirectX, gotto love it!

This is very good news indeed. I will test out when I get back to TX on Wed. I will be building a new i7 boxen and it will have Win7 x64 on it to run a VM with Big Adv.
