i'm debating if i should upgrade to win 7 from vista

is there any actual difference in gaming performance between win 7 and vista?

I can't believe this is still a question. Go for it, there is no reason not to.

Except it costs money and takes time? :p

I can't really compare though, never used Vista for gaming, went from XP to Win 7, didn't notice any drop in performance in most games (except when enabling Dx10 which so often kicks my performance in the balls).

in the next few years DX9 is slowly not going to be used in games and youre gonna have to live with that kick in the balls

I dont mind a performance kick in the balls if the visual quality is vastly superior, at the moment the visual difference is hard to pick in most games unless you look at screenshots side by side to see subtle differences in shadows and lighting. When devs start developing solely for Dx10/11, hopefully we'll actually start seeing some eye candy increase to match the performance kick in the balls. ;)

Gaming performance is same/slightly better. It's also a smoother experience imo. Mouse input on Vista always felt a little off, to me, though I used it for over 18 months. 7 feels more like XP to me, in games.

It depends. What are your system specs?

If you have a lower end system, yeah you will see a little boost because it does use less memory with 1GB of ram installed (around 500 compared to 800 of Vista) If you have 2-4GB, the ram usage is the same as Vista. I have a medium ranged system (3ghz core 2, 4GB ram, GTX260) and noticed zero boost going to 7, speaking in just gaming terms. Some people like 7 because it's lighter with Superfetch which means your HDD won't grind away as much right after boot. Other than that, and some new features, 7 is very similar to Vista.

Vista has had a platform update issued which basically grants it access to all gaming related features of 7, ie, DX11.

What you could do is just get a copy of 7 from somebody or however you can obtain software, and just run it for the free 30 days. If you don't think it's a big boost, just reinstall Vista.

4GB ram, pentium dual core @2.5, 8800 gtx

Pentium D?

For that system, yeah Windows 7 will likely help a bit because a Pentium D is a 4-5 year old CPU.

But for the money you're going to spend on 7, you will be better off buying a Core2 duo (if your mobo supports one) and stick with Vista and overall have a better system.

I don't know how Vista performs after some of its more recent updates, but I know when Windows 7 RTM came out last August that Windows 7 provided between 10% and 30% performance increase, depending on the game and system.

do you all think my computer could handle windows 7, or rather, would I want to upgrade from xp? See sig for specs.

My buddy has his win machine running on an older pentium 4 and he says it scales much better than vista did.

Now I have to justify spending the money to upgrade the OS when I can spend that money on more memory or a faster harddrive. Would be nice to turn my 30sec bootup into 15 with a ssd.

Winows 7 is superior to Vista in every way. It feels like Windows XP , but with the interface of Vista.

Vista to 7, I'd say the interface is better but the performance is about the same. Startup times are faster, it feels a bit "snappier" in day to day use (purely subjective) but gaming is exactly the same. I've got a couple older laptops I use rarely that I haven't migrated over from Vista to 7, whereas the laptop I use day to day and my tower are both running 7 Pro.

I find I miss things like being able to right-click on the task bar icon for a program and choose to start a new instance of it (I use this a lot with Firefox and Explorer). I also miss the side-pane on the left of the Explorer window with the downloads folder / documents / harddrives and optical drives / etc on it. I hated how Explorer behaved after moving to 7 at first, but I've gone from a traditionalist (Win 95 style windows -- everything opens in its own window) to "modern" since the combination of the side shortcuts, the ability to go anywhere in the current open tree by clicking on the folder name up toward the top of the window, and the forward and back buttons are almost always quicker once you get used to them. Also really cuts down on screen clutter, which while more important on my 12" ultraportable is still useful on a 26" 1920x1200 display.

Get 7 if it's cheap and you care about something it brings to the table. Stick with Vista if you're happy with it and don't want to spend the cash. DX10 is key anymore, so XP isn't really an option for a gamer, but Vista is far from dead.

that is complete bullshit, how could they do that to us

Actually, the article just says you have to run Vista Service Pack 2, that they won't support Vista without service packs installed anymore. For some reason some people hate the changes made by service packs for XP and Vista so much they refuse to install them. Needless to say, if they're that hard-headed they probably don't care much about keeping security up to date in the first place.

he said Pentium Dual Core not Pentium D. that probably means an E5200 which isnt too terrible.

how the heck did he get an 8800gtx in that case though???

yeah it will run perfectly fine.. hell im running windows 7 on a athlon XP-M 2400+ barton laptop with 512mb of ram with a custom install that uses less ram.. but runs far better then windows xp and well vista would never run on that laptop.. though i have to keep aero off since it doesnt have a dx9 IGP in it.. was one of my boredom nights and tried it and glad i did because now that laptops actually usable..

also i dont know if this is nvidia's drivers or if its windows 7.. but the one thing i did notice, primarily in crysis since its the only dx10 game i currently have, the game ran much better in dx10 then it did in dx9.. i lost about 10fps running dx9.. if anyone else has notice this going between vista and windows 7 with an ati card let me know so i can blame nvidia instead of vista..

Crysis runs better in DX9 whether in Vista or 7. I dual booted for a while and benchmarked both Crysis and Warhead many times. theres no way you got better framerates in DX10 unless something was amiss with your pc.

hmm then what the hell.. on well guess ill just stick with dx10 then.. makes no sense either though.. tried it on both systems running w7 and same drivers and got the same results.. maybe its something in the custom windows 7 install im using..

i dont think im getting better frame rates running dx10.. i think im just getting worse dx9 frame rates then what i should be.. since my dx10 frame rates match most of the reviews for the gtx 260 216 core..

No point in going with DX11 if you don't have a DX11 card and OS.

I was playing the new AvP on XP Pro and a BFG 7950 and it was shit.

So I upgraded to Win7 and an Ati 5850 and I'm getting 60fps with everything maxed and The DX11 features enabled.

I'm also running it on a socket 939 amd +3800 single core with 2gb ram and zero issues.

I went with the full retail because I'm building a quadcore monster machine :)

MW2 and L4D 2 run smoother and play better but that's probably due to the 5850 I upgraded to :D

Unless you just really want too, I can see no really good reason to upgrade a modern PC from Vista to Win 7. On a new build, yeah buy the newest OS, but on a computer with a perfectly good install of Vista it seems a waste of money. There will not be any performance difference between the two worth talking about.
