My friend asked me to post this since neither of us can figure it out. His ATI drivers crash all the time and also his computer BSODs. He has updated his bios, disabled cool and quiet, updated drivers, cleaned drivers, gone to older drivers, but it still crashes. The weird thing is that it doesn't crash when in a game, it only does it when his computer is idle or at the desktop, it's perfectly stable when gaming.

His specs.
Asus M4A88TD-M/USB 3.0
Athlon II X4 620
Radeon 5750
Win 7 Ultimate x64

He also has an older 3870 and the problem is the exact same with it.

Help would be appreciated.
 
Doesn't make sense, but what does these days? The crap I run into has people working at CERN scratch their heads..

- Is Windows fully patched up and legit
- Is the RAM healthy
- Can he open up msconfig and check what starts up together with Windows
- and just check the task manager after a fresh boot for what's there

What kind of PSU is he running and what are its values when the machine is running idle

When it suffers an idle crash, is it after a random amount of time, or something that could be considered a fixed amount?

odds are the crashing isn't the card if its working fine in games.. because your friend turned off cool 'n quiet, have him set windows power saving to performance or balanced mode, see if the idle crashing stops.

also have him check the cpu voltage in gpu-z and make sure theres not an excessive V-droop when idle. i've had it happen on a couple boards where the idle voltage would drop .02 lower then the required voltage for that clock causing it to crash at idle.. that athlon x4 620 should be at 1.32 or 1.325v.
 
It was actually the PCI-E link state management causing the problem for him. He has been crash free for over a week.

On that note, I know another person who has the same problem, but they have XP, is there a setting somewhere in XP for link power management?
 
if there is its in the power saving advanced options but i don't think there is one in windows xp. maybe if you go into the advanced settings for the chipset in the system device manager.
