What I want to do is install Vista onto my SATA hard drive, then plug in my IDE hard drive and move the files I need from there onto my SATA drive. Would I be able to just plug in the drive and move the files or would it make me format the drive?

Does your motherboard recognize the SATA drive? If so, then so will Vista.

I need to know if it will see my old IDE drive without having to format. Sorry if I was unclear. I want to use my IDE drive as a secondary hard drive. It still has Windows XP, all my old programs, and music and videos I want to move to my SATA drive. I was wondering if I can skip the hassle of backing up the files I needed to CDs and just plug in the IDE hard drive, move and files I need to the SATA drive, and then reformat it. I'm not sure if will Vista will allow me to access the drive or make me format it.

Yes, as long as you have the SATA controller booting first, your system should not even show the option to boot into XP.
