Playstation 3 supports only 16:9 whereas the monitor is 16:10 so the image will be stretched. I’m OK with that but I’ve heard that the monitor can be damaged if it receives incompatible signals. Is this true? I’m thinking of getting a PS3. Thanks!

It won't be damaged -- 1920x1080 on a 1920x1200 panel (or 1280x768 on a 1920x1200 panel) will not do any damage. It's damn near impossible to damage an LCD that way, only CRTs, and generally poorly designed ones.

Thank you for the reassurance. The 2209wa is a 22" monitor that does 1680 x 1050. If I buy the PS3 I'll try to set it to 720p or 1080p.

Yes. It doesnt break. Monitors have not been broken by incompatible signals in decades even in CRT era. At worse it shows a text box warning about unknown signal.

And yes, your monitor is perfectly compatible with PS3 or any device sending HD picture by HDMI or DVI.

Your PS3 will only damage the Dell 2209WA if you drop it on top of your monitor or you throw the PS3 against it.

1080p won't be an option, since the panel is incapable of 1920x1080. 720p will work fine, though, and most games are 720p only anyway. Only a big deal if you intend to use it for Bluray.

The 2209WA can take a 1080p input, but it will be stretched vertically, same thing with every 16:9 res.. If it had aspect scaling it might downscale 1080p to 1680 x 945, but it doesn't so it won't.
