will underclocking my cpu really save energy?

I have parts laying around the house.. I just got one of those magicjacks for the home phone.... Btw-- it works great and was super easy to set up. After the phone company wanted 80 a month for unlimited service in the us----- "ummmmm,. no"..Got the mJ to see if it worked ok-- and it worked great... 19$ a year vs 960$:)

Sorry-- back to my question.... I want to build a small very low power pc for the mj... My thought was to under clock my cpu... No gpu and only a gig of ram along with no fans and a passive cooler on the cpu.. .. Will under clocking my cpu and lowering the V going to the chip really make that big of a difference on power usage? Also--- Is there much of a power difference between a older P4 chip vs a core2 e6600... Both are laying around the house and could use either for this setup..

Not really sure of the actual difference in costs, only way i know for sure is to get hold of something like a kill-a-watt or something similar and measure the difference at the wall and then calculate it from there.

Yes, it will. the e6600 would probably be better as it has speedstep so it can clock down, the p4 can't. I like RM clock for this; using performance on demand.

Didn't later p4's not have speedstep enabled following the introduction of the Pentium - M or was that just for laptops?

E6600 is 65W TDP.

Your going to have to be talking VERY old P4's to get down that low. I'm talking back before Cedar Mill, before Conroe, to the Northwood era. 1.6-2.4 ghz range chips.

The E6600 is going to provide massively more performance for the power.

BTW. My Intel Q9550 with 6GB of memory, 3 hard drives (not sure how many are spinning), gforce 7200 and HD tuner card pulls in around 100W (measured by a killowatt meter) at idle (speed step of 2.03GHz and stock settings).
