Will this work for a 5040x1050 setup?

A passive VGA to DP will work well if the adapter can support 1920x1200 (so your res won't be a problem). I recently tried this adapter instead of an active DVI to DP adapter and I am far happier with the passive VGA. You don't get the DP port monitor dropping and the constant windows "bing bong" connect disconnect sounds when entering games and changing screen modes to and from eyefinity mode. In fact with the apple active DVI adapter I was using I couldn't even setup an extended mode setup at times let alone seemlessly hotkey between modes. With my VGA to DP adapter it is a dream. The only downside is you get an analog signal on the monitor using it which is not quite as clear as DVI but its good enough for one of my side monitors and after a while you don't notice the difference.

I have no idea how a passive DVI to DP would go, you might have a chance at your resolution but who knows.
