will this work for 2x 8800 GTS?

i was wondering, can i power a pair of 8800 GTS's in SLI w/ my silverstone ST65ZF? i checked SLI Zone's list of approved power supplies, and mine isn't listed under the 8800 GTS SLI approved PSU. i've got it running a pair of 7900 GTO's, and i've had no problems w/ it.

maybe jonnyGURU can chime in on this?...

Slarti> it looks like you're right; my st65zf won't have enough juice.

from jonnyGURU's post in that linked forum thread:
G8800GTS SLI is 12V @ 55A with two PCI-e

from the silverstone website:
combined +12V: 42A/504W (Peak: 45A/540W)

not a good way to start my morning. :(

I would give it a try before getting to upset. The approved list is a little excessive.

Exactly.

I know people with 8800GTX's on Powerstream 520ADJ's and Strider ST60F's already.

Now, the G80's aren't being used to their full capability. Software limitation? CPU bottleneck? Don't know. But cross the bridge when you get to it.

spectre> nah, not upset. my 7900 GTO's in SLI can still hang. though it'd make my day better if i had a definitive answer...

jonnyGURU> so do you think i can power a pair of 8800 GTS's in SLI and the rest of my gaming rig w/ my current PSU? your opinion is highly regarded, since you are the PSU guru...

Each 8800GTX sucks up 12-13A, and the 8800GTS should take less than that. According to techreport, it's just under the power consumption of the X1900XT 256MB, which should mean ~9A per 8800GTS. Say 10A, because the power figures are lower in the techreport chart (possibly because of the difference from the motherboard).

Core 2 Duo CPU, 5-7A depending on clock speed
3A for mobo
0.5A per HD
1A per optical drive
20A for 2x8800GTS
2x0.3A for 2x120mm fans

Comes to about 32A. Anything with 36A or more should be fine.

that sounds optimistically low IMO, but maybe there is some truth (or fiction?) to that. i still have slightly less than 60 days left on my step-up period, which means i won't see any G80's anytime soon. i personally don't know much about PSU's, so when i bought my ST65ZF i thought it had enough power to last me for another few years - not another few months.

i'd figure i get a head start.

Is there something wrong with my figures?

i don't think there's anything wrong w/ your figures, mind you. from what i've read and understood, i'll need upwards of 50A on the +12V, so that's why i thought your figures seems "optimistically low".

i've tried to read up as much as i can to figure out if my current PSU will support 2x 8800 GTS's in SLI, but so far i don't have a definitive answer, and my PSU isn't certified for 8800 GTS's in SLI on NVIDIA's website.

looks like i'll be playing the waiting game...

His figures were for the just the video card.

It would be physically impossible for a pair of G80 cards to draw that much power. I think "50A" is for the whole system if you're quoting that reputable source.

But even 50A sounds kind of high, as you only have two hard drives and an X2 processor, and let's face it.... you're PC is not going to be running every component at maximum power draw.

You asked for my opinion and I gave it to you. Go with what you have. If you need more power, cross that bridge when you get to it. If you're looking for someone to help you needlessly burn money away, you're looking at the wrong guy. ;)
