If I use two DVI monitors for the sides and then a Monitor in the center that has a Displayport cable from the xfx 5770 right into the monitor.

Will that keep me from needing the Active Displayport adapter since it would be display port right into the monitor?

yes it should work. you could have the monitors in any configuration. the monitor configuration wizard should sort that out quite easily.
