Hey all

I am speccing a system for a friend, the budget is $600 US. Here is what I have come up with;

CPU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16819103733

Mobo
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16813128034

Case

Memory

Video Card

HD

DVD

PSU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16817128005

I have seen that these video cards require a minimum 450 watt psu, this one is only 480 but apparently peaks out at 530W.

What do you all think? This machine will be used for gaming and downloading movies music etc.

Please feel free to make any suggestions as to different equipment but only if its from Newegg!

Thnx!

It should be fine with that machine, though I'd still suggest something with a bit more breathing room.

Go by the main rating, not the peak rating. It can't keep that up for very long.

I know you said "only Newegg" but this Silverstone gives you a 80+% efficient 560watt rated modular for $85.51 + S/H. I'd personally go with it.

Look a forty dollar power supply unknown brand is not a good buy. As for enough power? you need to be looking at how many amps are supplied to the 12v rail.

Power supplies are NOT an area where you should skimp, buy a good one, spend a hundred bucks. Cheapo power supplies are notorious for burning out and taking some hardware with them too say video card, motherboard, processor???

You should consider a PC Power and Cooling power supply or a FSP ( Fortron Source Group) they are high quality power supplies and very reliable, I would get a power supply that can supply at least 40 amps to the 12v rail and preferably one that has a single 12v rail not multiple ones, multiple rails carry fewer amps per rail among other things.

PC POWER and cooling are the best power supplies by far and should be a consideration in your pc build. Also build your pc with a FULL TOWER CASE that can handle an EPS 12 v power supply. New systems need MORE power and this means LARGER power supplies, get a case and power supply that can fit your current AND future upgrade plans and remember.......Penny Wise can also mean Pound Foolish.

A Good Case and GOOD power supply are WELL WORTH the cost. If your budget doesnt allow for them then you need to RETHINK YOUR BUDGET, buy hardware as you can afford it and gradually build your system.

FSP's Epsilon platform can actually end up with out of spec ripple on the 12v rail, so I wouldn't normally recommend them when there are so many other good options out there. PC Power and Cooling makes great supplies, but they tend to have a real price premium (I own one, I'm happy with it, but it's not for everyone). Silverstone, Seasonic and Corsair tend to be better options in the mid range... and in most cases an Xclio will be fine, too.

Hiper is Andyson. So, it's not that bad.

PCP&C is not the best, by far. They have "good" power supplies that are overpriced. Many other power supplies can do everything PCP&C can do, at half the price.

Try the Xclio goodpower 500, or up your budget a bit and get the Silverstone ST50EF (Not from newegg, you can find it for a good $20 less everywhere else), or Enhance ENP5150GH (from ewiz.com), which isn't much more.

Easy, killer. This is a budget rig, not a liquid cooled dual-quad system with SLI and RAID. 480W on the 12V rails is a ridiculous recommendation.

There is absolutely no reason to stick a PC P&C in a system like this, and like silent-circuit said, FSP's current crop of power supplies are known for ripple under load (although the 500W Epsilon seems to be ok).

I agree with Bbq's recommendation of the Enhance 5150. You can get it here for a decent price.

P.S. The Centurion 5 is one of the best bang for the buck cases around. Stick with it.

Not about the PSU, but I'll also throw in my support for that case. I used it to build a computer for my gf and I was very suprised by the quality, solid enough for a good computer, and everything lined up where it should. Sadly, I can't say that about other cases in that price range.

hey guys thnx for the input here. I hear what you are saying about quality components, and that is the tough part of a "budget" gaming build isn't it?

I did some further looking and found these, what do you guys think?

Which do you guys think would be best or best value for the $?

None of those.

Go with this:

The Enhance unit I linked you to earlier is less expensive and of higher quality than any of those.

None of those three. The Coolermaster is just a 500w with a 650w label slapped on, the Xion is just another blah topower, and the rosewill is a 'RD' which isn't a good one.

StealthXstream is an FSP Epsilon. In other words, way out of spec ripple at high loads.

MSI = Solytech = Deer = Generic crap.

I suggest sticking with the ENP5150GH or HX520.
