BF2 and everything else...for the matter.
I wasnt able to find a specific thread or answer in the faq...so if this is an obvious repost...my bad (thats what you get).

The system:
3200 venice
Asus A8NE (Amd desktop bundle)
4x512 Kingston Hyper X

36Gig Raptor (windows boot)
36Gig Raptor (dedicated page file drive)
74Gig Raptor (Games/Apps)

320 WD Sata (media/leech) http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=958195

-Thank You

i haven't seen too many people with a hard drive that is dedicated to page file.
Why are you setting it up like that?

the 36gb raptors are not as fast compared to the 74gb model. Its better just getting 2 74gb raptors.. 1 for windows+partition for page file, the second for games.. and another hard drive for back up.

For bf2 it may speed up loading the map but it wont affect the "verifying client" portion of it.

Hell I would go with a larger higher density drive. A game like bf2 has a long large sustained read before you enter the game. I would go with a 300 GB Maxline III or a Hitachi drive rather than the second Raptor. This would give you more speed getting into the game since the sustained read is faster on the larger density drives.

I offset my paging file to a second drive also, but I actually use that drive to for storage. Since in games it is not pulling from that drive other than paging, this is a good setup. I don't know if it is any faster though than standard, but it does make a difference in apps like photoshop.

Also you do realize that you will be running at 333 and not 400 with all slots filled using 4x512? Just a question, not a ridicule.

Well with my current Alabatron board the 4x512 are running at 400...so I wouldn't question
Asus being able to do the same.

I'll do the page file on its own drive so that its on the outer edge of the platter...and I'll have
a second partition on the same drive for /drivers/game iso's/essential app installs.

Didn't know the 74's were faster than the 36's, thought they were the same...

Now I know...and knowing is half the battle...

Revision E A64s (Venice/San Diego/Manchester/Toledo) can run 4x 512 @ 400/2T. Older A64s have a memory controller limitation that forces 333/2T.

Back on topic, the WD740GD is significantly faster than WD360GD, and the 73GB is cheaper than two 36's. 2GB of RAM is a better investment than having a page file drive. Once you have 2GB of RAM, page file usage should me minimal. If you feel compelled to buy more than one Raptor, go for it, but stick to the 73GB. The 36 is a joke. Realistically, return on investment drops pretty dramatically once you get past buying the first WD740GD.

Raptors are crap for large file transfers tey are good for small, rapid burst, but most SATA II and other SATA drives with a 16mb buffer beat out Raptor for large file transfers.

and with 2g of ram, you dont need a 36g for page file, that seems more like attempted bragging rights then efficiency.

Would the WD2500KS be better than the 36.?
hmm

What is your definition of large file transfers? :)

wouldn't a large pagefile also become fragmented very easily, thus hurting performance?

large file transfer i would say , mmmmm 100mb or more.

as for pae file - the page file doesnt get that fragmented and defrag'n it does very little anyways, - interesting read on ocforums about it if i can find it but basically stating the page file does not get fragmented as much as people were lead to beleive.

I'm not gonna set a 36Gig page file...I was gonna set it to system controlled and use a 36gig raptor originally because its the smallest...but now learning the 74 Gigs are faster I'll make a
5 gig primary partition for the page file and the rest will be for game iso/app iso/drivers

Hell at one point I was considering getting a 4GB solid state storage device just for the
page file.

My current system is a 3.06Northwood and with 2 gigs of ram and a Maxtor DiamondMax10 300GB pata drive...I'm always one of the first in the game (and rush for the tank).

Just that now that I've aquired some pretty swanky compontents (for cheap) I thought now I
can spend some money to really tweak the setup (winning a GTX justifies a lot for me).

Why are you soo obsessed about your page file.

with 2g of ram you could TURN OFF your page file - the most page file you would need is 1G - you dont need anything more then that with 2G of installed ram.

I'm also gonna have a HD Tuner card to capture HD show and regular shows while I play...
This past weekend (at my friends house lan) one of my friends had a tuner card and Media
Center record USC/Oregon while we played BF2 and Zero Hour...it was cool.

{edit}

The pr0n torrents dont stop for anything.

What kind of TV do you own?

The main TV is a Gateway 46" ED plasma (yeah I know :( ) I'm just gonna have a regular
pc there to stream video from my file server to its DVI port. Save for the industry's loudest
buzzing noise it produces a really great picture.

My main monitor is gonna be the dell 2405FPW, gotta push that GTX.

What is the peak commit charge (task manager/performance) on the system after heavy load?

Chances are with 2GB nothing you do with the page file will change performance, why? Because you aren't paging to disk due to the amount of available RAM.

thats cool. atleast you have a bigscreen :)
Gotta work on getting a full HDTV within the next couple yrs.. (move on from the EDTV)
Its cool to have a big screen and a nice computer.

My new issue with that setup is the fact that you intend to record while playing and have a regular A64 Venice and not an X2. You may experience some choppiness doing that in your recording, and in your gameplay. With the Fusion HD card, and my A64 Winnie 3200+ I could game, but did get some choppy recordings. With the X2, no issues, but now its in a shuttle with no slots (unless there is a PCI-e 1x card coming out soon).

I see that u are running 2gb but its 4x512 dimms. I think there was a discussion on how for AMD systems its better to run 2x1gb. Anyyways once again i dont think messing around with the page file will help you load BF2 faster, and like i said you can only speed up the level load not the "verifying clients" part.

I'm pretty sure there is a discussion in this thread about it too. ;)

Watch your HDD LED when you are verifying client data, see what it's doing? Yeah, it's constatanly lit. Anything that improves read/transfer rates or gives the system enough RAM so it doesn't have to page to disk should improve that time.

I am gonna get an X2 eventually but when I record my games with Fraps I notice no choppines...though Fraps is set with half resolution.

WD2500KS will smoke WD360GD. Costs the same, and gets you 200 more gigs. Heck, my WD2500KS runs with the WD740GDs that my friends have, at least in terms of game loading performance. It's a fantastic drive, as is its 400GB big brother.

Quick note... In Windows XP, you can never truly turn your page file off (disbale it).

how does it compare to a 36GB MAU?
:p

You already know what I'm going to say. Fujitsu MAU series delivers the best desktop and workstation storage performance that money can buy. However, WD's 7200RPM/16MB drives are pretty zippy. They look awesome in SR's 2006 DriveMarks, and general usage with mine has been equally impressive. If I wasn't broke, I'd be buying more of them. I really want a 250GB T7K250, P120, and DM10, then we could have a 250GB performance shoot out. 7200.8 would be invited as well, but it probably would not be pretty for it.

I know, just wanted to hear it again since I got mine yesterday. :D
