Will this HSF be ok?

Ok i was given a "broken" Dell Dimension 8100 with a Socket 423 P4 1.7GHz, but the heatsink sucks and is missing some of the mounting hardware...anyways...what i was wondering was:

will a heatsink designed for up to 1.5 GHz be ok for a 1.7GHz p4?

yeah i mean from the looks of the stock heatsink/fan combo, it was just the heatsink of the proc, and a duct going to a case fan...so this HAS to be better than that...

and to the second guy...what were some problems with them?

well the biggest thing was when they came out (Introduced at 1.5Ghz) The previous 1Ghz Pentium III out performed it.... so it was like wtf? how is this a step forward... thats all.

I can Deffinatly say a Pentium III 933 - 1Ghz Coppermine, will perform the same and or better than that Pentium 4 1.7GHz.... But its not a bad machine for *free* you know

It wasnt the coppermine, but the Tualatin, which came out after Willamette.

Hard to say... half the pipeline, but a quarter (roughly) of the FSB... Plus the fastest Coppermine was 1.26Ghz wasnt it?
