Depends on the game, but yes...you'll be CPU limited. I have a single 6970 with a Q9550 @ 3.8Ghz, and I run into CPU limitations in BF:BC2 during heavy physics situations. On two cards...I'd imagine the bottleneck would be pretty severe. That isn't to say you wouldn't benefit from the cards in some situations...but in heavy CPU physics games, you'll have issues.
At that res and cpu, bottleneck is too severe of a word . Can anyone here that says he will be quantify their examples? Like BF BC2 - what is the avg fps lost vs a 4.5ghz sandybridge? Willing to bet its minimal in real world like 5fps avg/min tops.

Very much so, your performance would be indistinguishable to that with two 6850s. Just get those instead unless you're buying a new CPU as well.

That Tom's hardware test was looking at GPU loading...and they didn't do a complete study of FPS results. Additionally, two 6970's are quite a bit faster then a GTX460. lastly, the big kicker is minimum FPS, and its really important with highly CPU bound console ports like BF:BC2, and other games with lots of physics. Don't forget an i5 is faster then his Q series chip...
In games with a heavy CPU physics load, I simply don't think a Q9000 series chip is up to the task, especially at speeds less then 4Ghz. At 3.8Ghz, my Q9550 struggles when things start exploding in BF:BC2...I average 70-80 with a single 6970 at 1080p (all high, 4xaa, 8xaniso). However, when physics needs to be calculated...I get FPS drops into the 20's. Its only for a short time...perhaps a split second, but it does impact gameplay.
Would he get an FPS boost from a second card? Probably. Will that boost negate the CPU physics limitations? Not likely. Does this apply to all games? Absolutely not.
Are these 775 chips bad? No...I love my CPU...more then capable of handling just about anything I want to do. But I'm not gonna pretend it isn't a 3yr old CPU.
But to clarify things for the OP. Your current chip is not ideal for those cards. However, its not like its going to be a "slow" gaming rig. If possible, forgo the second 6970, and make the jump to Sandy Bridge. Its a worthwhile upgrade...especially with how well they overclock. Finally something that will offer a significant performance boost for us 775 users.

well, I buy the top end and wait and wait 2 generations. It might be overkill now, but some new games are coming out in 2011 and I want to be upgraded. I like to be able to turn up AA and such.
Anyway, I'll buy a core i5 with a new mobo and ram and get a single 6950 and flash it to a 6970. When a game comes out that it can't handle or they go on sale, I'll buy another one.
Normally I would've just upgraded the whole damn computer but times are tough. So I have to choose.
