Will there ever be a 4890x2?

Or is it never going to come out because of the 5000 series release?

probably not I would assume. I think they will be putting there resources into the 500 series.

Darn. The 4890 is a pretty nice card. Wish they had done an X2 version.

No...5870 is right around the corner and it looks like TSMC finally solved their 40nM yields issues. I guess ATI partners were watchign TSMC yields very carefully....if the problems persisted they surely would have went ahead with a 4890x2 version.

Honestly - the 4890s have such fame that I bet we'll see *something* else out of them - even after the 58xx series comes out.

unless we see another sapphire version or something...

like the sapphire radeon 4850x2

its a possibility.. but very doubtful.. im not sure how many companies would be willing to put in the extra cost to build the cards while at the same time putting in the cost for the 5k series.. if the 4890x2 doesnt sell for crap then they are out of a lot of money..

With th 5 series right around the corner...it would be quite the waste of cash. I can only hope the 5 series is as good as they sound.

you know what, it probably won;t make it out of R and D...

the 4870 is only marginally slower than the 4890...

you could probably get a 4870x2 that comes pre-overclocked (high binned chips) and it would probably be VERY close to what a 4890x2 could produce.

with the 5 series cards on the way, and the 4870 chips being overclockable close enough to the 4890, it probably wont happen

A single 5870 is supposed to be faster than one 4870X2, so why the heck would AMD waste money on an 4890X2 ? The 4890 series is over starting next month, it is all 5800 series from there on out

Here are power measurements made by X-bit labs using their custom PSU rig that directly monitors the current being fed to each component: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/radeon-hd4890_6.html#sect0

Their methodology for measuring power consumption is more reliable than the basic power meters used by those other review sites.

a few months ago AMD/ATI announced that a 4890X2 was something they would entertain as a reference design, in other words if an OEM wanted to build it, they would sign off on it, however nobody stepped up and said yes lets spend the money just to play one-ups with nVidia and make a new $600 card in 2009 (when, you know, everything has gone to shit financially)

and, given that R800 is quite close to announcement/launch, it wouldn't make a lot of sense to create a 4890X2, release it at $600, and sell almost zero units between now and mid-September (at which point it becomes basically unmarketable at SRP)

so honestly I'm thinking it wont happen, 4890 fills a good market segment between the 4870 and X2

regarding power consumption:
http://www.nordichardware.com/news,9075.html

the "spec" for the proposed board had things clocked higher than a single 4890, likely an attempt to put it that much more ahead of the GTX 295 (the only real competitor), power consumption is supposed to be ridiculous if the board ever existed, which is likely another reason to stay production and just work towards good R800 solutions
