will the PS2 output pure bitstream?

well, my standalone DVD player died a little while ago and since im in a dorm room now with very limited space, im thinking ill just use the ps2 to play movies. if i buy that little dvd remote thing, will it allow me to output pure bitstream? as of now, i can only get it to output PCM 2ch audio, which sucks.

watching them on the PC is pretty much out of the question due to the PC's orientation to my bed, non-movable furnature, and the fact that my tv is larger than my monitors.

thanks!

If you use the optical port on it I believe you get Dolby Digital 5.1 and maybe even DTS out of it for dvds.

EDIT

Dont need to buy the remote unless you want to.

nope. the optical will only output PCM for me. ive tried every little setting i can find, and i cant get it to output anything but that :/

my old PS2 was like this too, but i am currently using the slim one.

yeah im not exactly sure what youre after here
but the optical port will do 5.1 and everything if whatever youre playing supports it

and the controller works fine for a remote if you ask me

take the disk out of the ps2 and boot it up, you need to enable digital output for the setup menu and it should work, check the settings on your recieer as well

My PS2 will do DD 5.1 output via optical, never tried DTS. It is a 1st run system (still kicking after picking it up first day of launch).

The PS2 will do DD and also DTS, it simply reads the track off the DVD, the encoding is done on your receiver...for movies. In game Discrete Surround is implemented at the discretion of the developer. Currently a few games support DTS 4.1 and lots of games do DD5.1 during their in-game FMV

Make sure your system settings are correct for digital output. Also, depending on what type of receiver you've got, make sure you are selecting a digital input and not an analog, if you happen to have both hooked up.

i just tried gladiator (dts and dd) on my PS2 that i got when it first came out (v1.0 or something) with an optical cable to a receiver that has both decoders. both came out PCM. weird. i have optical output set to on and it's the only audio output that's plugged in to anything. what gives?

i never tried this before because i have a regular old dvd player that doesn't output dts (because it's also one of the first of its kind), so i thought i might be able to do dts from the PS2. i guess i can't...

this is the tricky part that is easy to forget to do lol

i did enable digital output. no matter what track i select on the DVD (procinema, DD, DTS, whatever) it always outputs PCM 2ch.

id really like to know how you guys are getting DD out...

PCM wouldnt be recieved through analog, the analog is not hooked up the reciever. the receiver is a sony str-de575, and works with DTS and DD 5.1 just fine with all my DD/DTS stuff and my computer/old dvd player.

DAMN, I'd call that sucker a "Miracle Baby" and put it up on eBay, LOL. My first one died within a month, the replacement a bit more than a month later. The THIRD one lasted until the slim came out, then started getting disk read errors on about half my games, so I traded it and $50 to get the new slim, which is, so far, working well. Still a crap DVD player though, LOL.

I'd wager that HALF the 95 million PS2's sold are sitting in landfills.

i have everything set up correctly, because i would only be able to get sound if i had the optical output on for the playstation. the receiver is fine as well. it plays DD from my DVD player all the time...

this is strange i say.

ok, the problems you guys are having are weird. See, when it comes to DVD's and audio playback all the PS2 is doing is outputting a digital stream to your receiver which should then pick up whatever track is being output and decode correctly.

The fact that the PS2 is downsampling is odd, as it should just pass the signal on through

Also, make sure that if you have a receiver that does special modes (DTS ES, DD EX, etc) that you have that turned off, because that will override any setting you choose on the DVD itself.

Heres a test, if either of you have GTA:VC or SSX 3, pop those in and go to the audio option screen in the game. Choose to enable DTS and see if that produces any changes.

Post the models of receiver you two both have, and we'll see what we can figure out for you...if we can't get something figured out, I'd say call sony.

rats, and i just packed my ps2 up :p

ill set it up and pop in VC. i didnt know that could do dts, lol

Does your receiver have an option to set the input to either PCM or bitstream? I played around in the menu on my PS2, and the only digital out options were on and off... Perhaps you need to switch the type of encoding data your receiver is expecting?

the only options in VC are stereo, mono, or prologic II.

nullo: the reciever automatically picks up what scream it is recieving.

thanks guys.

receiver: Onkyo TX-DS676
the receiver is definitely set to digital audio on because you have to tell the receiver that it's getting an optical signal to the particular video that the PS2 is hooked into.

my PS2 is one of the very first made (second wave of shipments i think) and the drivers are old too as a result
DVD-Player driver is 1.20U
i have digital audio set to "on" in the configuration menu.

the signal coming from my DVD player is also a digital signal and the receiver sees it as DD perfectly, but the PS2 is definitely downsampling to PCM 48kHz.

Hmmm... I have an Onkyo TX-DS575 in the living room (model down from phoderpant's unit).
I played around with it for a bit, make sure you have the input with your PS2 hooked up set to digital audio in, also check to see if your receiver can override the DSP sent by the DVD player. I know that with mine if I click the stereo button it overrides whatever it is being sent, and will play in stereo, even if it is receiving a 5.1 signal. Set it to pro-logic and send the signal again and it should default to 5.1

my receiver is a Sony STR-DE575.

the device is set to DVD/LD (which is where the PS2 is hooked up) and hte input mode is set to Optical. it is set to A.F.D (automatic field detect) which has always worked great... it just detects what stream it is recieving and plays it back bit for bit with no processing. whenever it is decoding a DTS/DD 5.1 stream, a light comes on indicating that it is decoding a multichanel stream... the light has never come on with the PS2.

its worked great with the standalone, my NF2 soundstorm and my Digital X-Mystique DDL solutions, as well as digital passtrough with the NV dvd decoder, with both optical and coax.

hmmmm...i have it set to dts/dolby surround for the dsp, yet only PCM.

i don't know if yours does this, but when the receiver gets a DD or DTS signal, a little symbol comes up saying that it's so, even if i press the other dsp buttons.

Try setting it to DD instead of AFD (which is automatic format decode by the way). My roomate has a similar receiver and apparently sometimes the AFD function doesn't quite get it right.

lithium726 said:
it doesnt have that option. i cant tell it to expect DD.

OK, my roomates is a 445 to the right of the AFD button is a 2ch button to the right of that is one that says mode, press the mode button, then set it to 'normal surround' and see what happens.

yeah, but thats sony's own DSP sorround mode... not pure DD

if it were decoding DD or DTS from teh stream, the decoding light would come on.

edit: with pulp fiction, DTS set, and the normsorround set, i can hear a hell of a lot of background noise that is supposed to go the sorround speakers in the center. in fact, setting this makes prologic mode come on.

do you have rear speakers on your setup?

well, i finally figured this out.

boot up a dvd, and stop it with square. then push select to get into the DVD player menu thingie, and go to setup options. go to audio, and by default, outputting DD and DTS are in the "off" position. change them to "on" (and while youre at it turn the parental controls off :p ) and youre golden!

so now im just gonna pick up the component cables and the dvd remote and use this as my dvd player :)

Glad to hear everybody got it all figured, out, I sure wasn't a lot of help...sorry

However upon double checking my GTA:VC ps2 disk, I can do DTS 4.1 with it, even has the little DTS symbol on the box...so, weird.

odd... my SA case and DVD only have the pro logic II icons on them...

Vice City does have DTS though.

They might have been space limited on SA since it was an absolutely enormus game. Thats simply a guess, since it's not like they need seperate tracks like a DVD.

More than likely given how much they were working to do with seemless loading, AI, and all the crap that goes on in SA at one time, they couldn't afford the processor overhead required for realtime DTS decoding on the PS2 in that title

I only own three titles on the PS2 that ever included the feature, and it was always 4.1

SSX tricky, SSX 3, and GTA VC.

Not too big a deal, and DPL:II does a hell of a job faking it for most games, you'd probably never really notice.

no joke... the game looked like absolute ass compared to the ohter ones, jaggies everywhere. i had to stop playing cuase it was so bad

problem with PL II is that my reciever only supports PL 1 :(

edit: dude, for some reason every time i saw VC i thought of san andreas for whatever reason. totally my bad... i dont even know how i missed that so many times.

Easy mistake, no harm done. I just thought you were pondering the same issue in different ways. ;)

And yeah, I couldn't play through SA even on the PC. I enjoy the Gangster ambiance moreso than theGangsta ambiance. I'm no saint when it comes to language, but certain aspects of that game and it's themes had me doing things I want no involvement with, and derive no joy from re-enacting in a game.

Although from a gameplay viewpoint it was full of cool shit.

I'm weird that way.

I have a slim ps2 hooked up to my reciever. I've only played maybe 20 minutes worth of games and tested out 1 dvd to see what it was like (got the PS2 free through my employment company) My receiver detects the Dolby Digital and DTS streams so that would indicate that it is indeed bitperfect.

I'm glad you did. I remember reading about how the optical out on some PS2's were just fucked, so you're lucky that's not the issue.

Glad you figured it out. How fucked up that Sony decided to hide that menu option like that... ugh.

I was waiting to see if you figured it out. Yes it does do bitstream, ther PS2 is actually a decent DVD player. Beware however if you a really old PS2 it will not do Progressvie Scan. Only newer models (can't remember the model number but it came out after Oct. '03) willl do 480p.

But yeah to alter DVD settings you gotta boot up a DVD, stop it, then go to DVD setting that way, it is separate from the dashboard settings.

I use my Slim PS2 as the my primary DVD player and the quality is just as good as my old Sony progressive scan DVD player on my HDTV.

yup, mine'll do progressive, but i dont have a progressive TV :p

ive got a flat-tube CRT with component in, but it doesnt support progressive.
