will the new r600 with hdmi also do audio processing?

i remember reading a long time ago that nvidia and ati were interested in being able to use their video cards to do audio processing as well (like for music production or whatever)

so is there any news of this thiing doing that too? that would be amazing! i know theres homebrew drivers that allow this to work with nvidia and ati cards but they arent that great.

anyone think this is likely, finally? also will they have a midrange card with hdmi/hdcp? or is it just the top of the line one? i hope that midrange card can be powered by my 520hx. whats the model numbers supposed to be on the midrangers?

are the midrange cards supposed to be coming out in may too or just the high end one?

Well, in the thread I linked to you'll notice that they have HD audio processors built onto the boards. Without cards in hand, and without drivers in hand, thats the same info everyone knows.

also will they have a midrange card with hdmi/hdcp? or is it just the top of the line one? i hope that midrange card can be powered by my 520hx. whats the model numbers supposed to be on the midrangers?

If you read the thread, R600, R610, and R630 will all include the HDMI port (which includes HDCP compatibility) and the audio processor.

This was answered months ago. ATi plans to launch all its R6XX cards at the same time, barring the XTX model (if there ever will be one under that moniker, nobody knows).

thank you! that helped. i dont even know which model is lower end im guessing lower number and all that, thats why i didnt know what to make of that thread, and i havnt been keeping up at all so i didnt know old announcements, but thank you very much for helping me out. :)

so im guessing the audio processor will be a seperate smaller processor from video... that kinda sucks cuz of course its gona be just powerful enough to let out the sound... maybe... maybe some models will have a better audio processor? i was hoping you could switch the main video processor into audio processing mode when you need that extra horsepower... since of course thats where most of the power will be...

but either way ATi is making great moves here, i was starting to lose hope but now i am very interested in them and i might even favor them over nvidia if this turns out properly

We'll have to wait and see what kind of processor is installed, and more importantly what kind of quality we can expect from it. Hopefully someone will have a sample in the next few weeks...
 
My guess it is will be a fairly simple implementation. When decoding movies the card takes in the entire signal, separates the video and audio streams and outputs them over the HDMI. Any form of EAX or audio processing for games will likely be CPU driven similar to current motherboard codecs.

There shouldn't be any technical restrictions on the kind of quality uses. Just expect higher quality to eat a larger portion of your CPU. Simply outputting digial audio over HDMI will likely be the main goal for the video cards.
 
Will the HD audio on the R600 be 5.1 or 7.1 compliant?
 
im confused with all this HDMI stuff on the r600? is like a sound card that i plug my logitech 5.1 speakers into?

No, the HDMI port carries the audio streams as well as the video signal so you can plug into a tv and get sound AND video using only the one cable. You will still get sound from the sound card. HDMI just makes things simpler for people with HTPC setups.
 
I think the audio chip ATi is going to use on the R600 is built by Realtek so don't count on it being all that great.

The HD codecs Realtek has been using lately have been very good in my experience with them. And if all you're using them for is digital audio they're going to be as good as anything else out there. If digital out is all they're being used for then quality is as good as they want to make it since it's software driven.
