I'm taking the plunge with my first SSD, a Plextor M3 256GB. Before I clone my boot drive I need to move a bunch of crap off it to get down to below 200GB or so. Has anyone had success moving non-Steam programs with Steam Mover?

I also ran across a $15 shareware program called Application Mover by Funduc Software that seems interesting. Does anyone have evperience with it?

I thought of going the clean install route but don't really want to spend 2-3 days reinstalling and updating all my applications.
 
Easiest way is to use NTFS symbolic links to create folders on your C drive that are then redirected to another drive. Move the big stuff you don't care about to another volume. How old is your install? You might really be happier doing a fresh install to the SSD making sure everything gets set to ssd-aware settings and you wouldn't believe how much crap has worked its way into your system. Huge installer and WINSXS folders stuffed with things you don't need anymore, bloated registry files, etc.
 
My install is a couple of years old. I run Registry Mechanic and Crap Cleaner every month or so to keep the registry and crap files in check. If the cloned install don't seem fast enough I will do a clean install but with a 1.5Mbs DSL connection the upgrades to Windows, Office 2010 and Steam crap take days to complete.

I found a link to this guide in another thread that explains how to clone a HDD to a SSD and get Windows to re-rate the SSD. Is that what you are refering to as SSD aware?
 
Well, a clean install makes sure your partitions are aligned and enables/disables the proper functionality. If you do clone your existing boot volume, make sure your clone app is SSD-aware for the proper partition alignment. Plextor includes with their drives a copy of Acronis Tru-Image HD which is the app you should use to image the HDD to SSD. Once you get the HDD size down to where it needs to be, just use that and copy it over. Also, make sure AHCI is enabled in your BIOS, which if it is not now you will need to do a few reg tweaks or you will get a BSOD on reboot.

I would highly suggest starting over clean.

When you do that, just move your steam folder over to the new drive. Install steam over the top of that folder and it will automatically keep all your games installed (even though it wont add them to the add/remove programs function)
 
I use Acronis 2010 which probably isn't SSD aware so I will use the Plextor version and I will have enable AHCI in the bios which I will probably forget to do the first time I boot to the SSD.

Dr, Stevil- The problem is that Steam and other games are about 100GB so I can't fit them all on the boot SSD. My current boot drive contains 369GB. Moving pron and other files will gain me maybe 100GB but most of the games are going to have to go to another drive.

Yes, you can use Steam Mover to move non-Steam programs. You just change the source directory in the Steam Mover program, and it will list all sub-directories for you to move.

Plextor now includes something called NTI Echo with their SSDs, at least the one I got from Newegg. It works well enough. Damn these things are speedy.

Ended up moving the whole Steam install to another drive and it was relatively painless.
