I'm unhappy with my system's performance when running QuickPar to verify large (15GB+) RAR archives, and also when extracting these archives. I have a 74GB Raptor as my boot drive, and a WD2500JD that I was going to use as a "junk" drive in addition to my RAID5 array.

The WD2500JD isn't as fast as the Raptor, so I was thinking another Raptor in RAID0 would probably be better than extracting from the Raptor to the WD2500JD. Plus with RAID0, you're always using both hard drives. I'd probably do a 40GB partition for Windows and all my programs (overkill, but games eat up space quickly) and partition the rest as a temp partition to do all my archive manipulation on. Space isn't an issue since I have a 900GB RAID5 array and I'll most likely stick the WD2500JD in an external enclosue for backups of my important stuff, including drive images of my boot drive, which I'll defintely do if I go with RAID0.

Something I just thought of, the "sluggishness" of my system while working with these files may be due to the fact I'm either extracting to or from my boot drive. Would having a completely seperate RAID0 array be better?
 
Well, the absolute fastest way to conduct such transfers would be between two RAID-0 arrays. You might even have good luck with Seagate drives 0_o, especially their 250/400GB 7200.8 units, and the 160GB 7200.9, although I haven't seen reviews on it. Seagate's firmware usually does a pretty good job on concurrent read/write operations like you describe, and their ridiculously high density gives their drives best in class transfer rates.

Another drive to consider would be the T7K250.

If you wanna use the gear you've got, RAID-0 with the 3200s to/from the Raptor is the best you can hope for.

2 RAID0 arrays is probably out of the questiom because I am not going to mess with the WD3200JDs in RAID5, and I'm gonna have a hard time find room for 2 more drives, much less 4.
Right now I'm thinking of keeping the Raptor as my boot drive, and adding a seperate, 2 disk, RAID0 array to do everything on.
Would the Seagate or Hitach drives be even better than 2 Raptors? I've got a chance to get 2 for $220.
The more I think about it, the more I think keeping my original Raptor as my boot drive and doing all this stuff seperate of my system drive should help the sluggishness I feel while it's working.
