Ive finally decided on a Leadtek 7800GTX

(please dont tread-hijack and start saying BFG or other brands, etc.)


my question is this, I've read some things about overclocking, etc.
While I am a 'newbie' at overclocking (this will finish my new and first ever AMD system) I can see the benefits/performance advantages of overclocking the CPU/MEM etc. But honestly, what kinda REALISTIC difference will I see if I overclock my videocard?

I read on one hardware review site:

was able to get a 13% overclock on the core from 430mhz to 494mhz and a 15% memory speed jump from 1200mhz to 1420mhz by just installing Coolbits and trial and error. This came out to a 952 point increase in 3DMark05.

I mean, that sounds great and all, but will it be (granted Im using a FX5700 now):

(before OC) "yay...this video card is cool!"
(after OC) "holy crap, this is UNBELIEVEABLE"

catch my drift? Is it really that benefitial or is it more of an e-penis/i paid for it, i wanna tinker around with it kinda thing?

Just curious.


Also, can someone maybe point me in the right direction as far as overclocking a 3700+ san diego on a K8N Neo 4 Platinum (good stable settings, etc.)?

The 7800GTX is a monster of a card... I had a 490/1350 overclock on mine before, but my PSU started acting shifty and I clocked down to stock...

to be honest, I really noticed no difference besides my 3dMark05 score.

its kinda like putting a turbo charger on the car... will you really get a ton of extra performance? no... but it makes you cooler!
 
Well considering how well the card overclocks its a crime not to. Just today I was over at xs and some guy over there had his up to 600mhz on the stock cooler (granted with v-mods) and that overclock is quite a difference from stock. Nearly 40% change in core frequency is alot and probably lets you bump up the res at least once or add an extra bit of aa so I think it's worth it. The again I'm obsessed with overclocking and tweaking so you probably shouldn't listen to me.
 
Don't base the changes you will see on 3d mark. Look at the games. And of course, the card is cpu limited ATM, so the real benefit is that it will be an awesome card for a little bit longer than a stock one.

Of course, it's still fun to get really awesome 3d mark scores. :D

Check out Mentok's 3dmark05 score list, you can see a lot of big gains with overclocked 7800s over stock. ~1000 05 marks is a big deal, and you can probably get more.

Course, my 7800 will be watercooled, so maybe I'm biased from having a larger area to overclock to.

As I see it, the only reason to not overclock would be if you bought the BFG or heavily OCed XFX card. 460/1300 or 490/1300 + a warranty is better than the improvement you'll get from OCing from those speeds. But if you get a more common 430/1200 or 450/1250 card, then I think you should OC. And if you need to, yu can always lie about the warranty.
 
overclocking my x800xtpe gained a few fps.. from like 6-15 on higher settings but really.. i put it back to stock because of the heat draw in my case and the difference was BARELY noticeable. And when i run 3dmark, ill OC it then. now CPU overclock.. thats different. I had HUGE gains from 3.2ghz to 3.8ghz to 4 ghz
 
You never really notice overclocking benefits in game, you really only get maybe 10-15fps or so out of big ass overclocks with retarded cooling measures. Its more noticable in 3d mark but in game, nope.
