I've been using my C2D E6300 ever since C2D was announced, it currently runs at 3.3ghz and i was wondering if it would bottleneck the ATI 4890?

No. When overclocked it should keep up with HD4890 just fine. Isnt the biggest difference between E8x00 and E6x00 series just power usage/temperatures and therefore overclockability? Speed isnt that much different.

As far as I know the 8000 series are more energy efficient 6000 series processors. Less energy = less heat = more tick tock on the clock.

I don't know if there's a cache difference or anything but if the CPU's are almost the same cept for speed and power usage, wonton's E6300 @ 3.6 would be better than your E8200 @ 3.4.

Do you guys think it's a good idea to upgrade from 8800GT to 4890 right now?
I can get a brand new XFX 4890 for $160CAD ($140USD) + tax! ( I live in Canada, so this is the best price i can get it for, + this has no rebates :) )

E8xxx have a bigger fsb and more cache and are about 15% faster clock for clock so no an E6300 at 3.6 would not be faster than a E8200 at 3.4. either way the ops E6300 cpu at 3.3 would not be an issue with a single 4890 especially above 1680.

L2 cache means everything for the c2d/c2q.. so the more you have the better performance clock for clock.. so the e8200 would be better then the e6300.. like cannondale06 said..

but still the e6300 wont bottleneck the 4890 with it overclocked..

what res are you playing at? even at 1680 the difference would be pretty large since your cpu is decent and at 1920 it would be very much worth it IMO. I would certainly grab another 2gb of system ram too though.

Yes, a 4890 will be a significant upgrade - it will be better than running 8800GT in SLI. And no, your CPU won't bottleneck it.

Your CPU is good enough for the HD 4890, and yes, Penryn is faster in a per clock basis, but it won't do a huge difference, my old QX6850 at 3.60GHz was able to keep up with a Q9650 at 3.20GHz in benchmarks and in games.

Not to thread jack but wheres this 4890 for $160?
(I live in Canada too and strongly considering a 4890...)

It was the in-store special at NCIX in BC, i lined up at like 8 30 and waited till 10 till it opened since there were only 3 4890 for $149.99CAD per store.
