I am upgrading my comp and am wondering if my current psu will handle it the new parts.
I have a 400w psu with a 17a 12v rail.

my new parts are:

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
AMD64 3500 Venice @ 2.2 GHz
2 GB (2x1GB) Corsair XMS in dual channel
GeForce 6800 Ultra

Will the 400w psu be ok or should I be looking for a more powerful one?

I ran an ultra and a 2.6ghz cpu off an ancient antec SL350 with a 16a 12v rail. You don't need crazy amounts of power to run a system. Check silentpcreview.com for system draws..very few singe card systems will draw more than 200w.

I wouldn't trust it. What brand is it?

Spend the money and pick up something better.

It's an Allied psu. It's done pretty well on my current system. Prior to my current system, I had a 1.8 Ghz Athlon, a GeForce MX 440 and 384 MB of ram and the 350w Antec psu did well but couldn't handle my current system. After I built my current system I would turn it on and it kept turning it self off after just a few seconds. I figured it was the psu so I bought the 400w psu I have now and computer worked just fine after that. I am wondering if the situation will be same since I am getting more ram, a more powerful cpu and 6800 ultra, which, if I'm not mistaken, requires its own power from the psu.

It might help to mention that I only have 1 hdd, 2 dvd-rom drives and only 1 case fan. I can't imagine those 4 things draw too much power.

I don't get.

But I am guessing 'deer' means "no good"

Deer means one of the worst psu's ever invented on this god forsaken earth.

yeah, i really don't have much faith in my current psu so i'm gonna get a 500w.

Get a better BRAND of psu, not higher wattage. Look in the stickies :)

The second link you provided is a wonderful psu (hint hint, its what ive got :) ). Either one of those SmartPowers though will be a great choice.

Speaking of PSU's...I'm looking to upgrade my current 200 watt ATX 1956D because of a new ATI 9800 Pro video card I bought. My only problem is my PC is a HP. And I know I pretty much have to stick with HP product. Question....do I go with a 300 - 400 watt PSU that basically fits the dimensions of my old PSU with similar wiring....or is there more to consider?
